Greggs Launches Vegan Ham And Cheese Baguettes

Major British bakery chain Greggs just welcomed its latest vegan option: a dairy- and meat-free ham and cheese baguette.

The baguette features Quorn’s plant-based ham and Violife’s dairy-free cheese. It can be ordered hot or cold.

This isn’t Gregg’s first foray into the vegan scene. In 2019, the chain released a vegan version of its popular sausage roll. The launch was a hit; Greggs credited the new product, in part, for its subsequent 14.1 percent increase in total sales.

The boost in sales motivated Greggs to give out £7 million to its roughly 19,000 employees.

Later, the company launched vegan steak bakes in 1,300 of its locations in the UK. A spokesperson for Greggs told The Grocer that its popularity was ‘bigger than anticipated’.

“Our team is working hard behind the scenes to meet demand,” they said.

Greggs vegan options

Since then, Greggs has sold vegan glazed ring donuts and seasonally, plant-based hot cross buns, sweet mince pies, spicy vegetable soup, and a Mexican bean and sweet potato wrap.

Even Greggs’ CEO Roger Whiteside tried out a plant-based diet in 2019, although it’s unknown whether he still adheres to it.

Demand motivated supermarkets like Iceland and Asda to stock some of Greggs’ vegan options themselves.

“We are constantly looking for new ways to increase customer choice,” said Preyash Thakrar, the Chief Strategy Officer at Asda. “By partnering with brands that fit with our core values of great quality and great value – like Greggs – we’re excited to be able to give our customers access to something new in store that we know they will love.”

I am not sure who these products are targeted at, I gave up meat and cheese when I became a vegan – why on earth would I want plants to replicate something I don’t agree with. Anyway, I guess I am in a minority of one because every time they launch a new product millions seem to rush out to try them – maybe people like to be reminded as to what they are missing for the sake of the species we no longer wish to torture and kill or perhaps the meat and cheese eaters feel guilty and are searching for the will power to become vegan and get healthy.

I cannot comprehend how so many people have so much trouble understanding such a ridiculously simple concept.

Why would a vegan eat a vegan ham and cheese baguette? Because they like the taste of ham and cheese baguettes. Hardly rocket science…

Hey vegan friend, I gotta disagree with u there. People don’t stop eating meat because of the taste, it’s because of the cruelty. If you can eat food that taste likes meat but not cause harm to animals then sounds good to me

Speaking from my own personal experience, I used to be one of the biggest meat eaters around! Now being vegan, i use these products as a once in a while treat and still enjoy the taste of the vegan alternatives. It was the animal suffering I didn’t like!

Plus these products can be great for new vegans or people looking to redue their animal product intake 🙂
