Ecotricity has become the first vegan energy company in the UK, after receiving approval from the Vegan Society.

The organization, which claims to be Britain’s greenest energy company, creates electricity from the wind and the sun, while their gas comes from frack-free gas mills.

Anaerobic digesters

Some of Britain’s biggest energy companies, including British Gas, use anaerobic digesters which are able to convert farm slurry, animal-based food waste, and slaughterhouse by-products into power.

The Vegan Society commented: “Electricity generated from animal products may be green but it cannot be vegan.”

Ecotricity state that wind energy is Britain’s most abundant and economical source of renewable power, and have begun building wind parks throughout the UK.

‘We have a moral imperative to reduce our carbon footprint’

Robbie Lockie, co-founder of Plant Based News, told The Times: “Farm animals generate vast amounts of methane, nitrous oxide, and CO2 — all causes of global warming. We have a moral imperative to reduce our carbon footprint. Vegan energy is a way of doing that.

“Vegans should be told how their electricity is created so they can make an informed decision.”
