Iconic footwear giant Dr Martens has seen its profit skyrocket by 70 percent, boosted by the success of its vegan range.
The range, which scooped the Best Vegan Boot Collection at PETA’s fashion awards last year, uses synthetic polyurethane plastic instead of leather.
“Felix Rub Off is our go-to vegan material – this synthetic leather substitute performs as well as the real thing and is made using absolutely no animal products,” Dr Martens’ website reads.
‘Multiple hundreds of percent’
According to the Independent, increased margins on these products meant underlying increased by 70 percent year-on-year to £85 million – with direct-to-consumer revenue soaring by 42 percent.
Kenny Wilson, Chief Executive of the brand, said in recent years sales of its vegan shoes have spiked by ‘multiple hundreds of percent’ – with animal-free footwear now accounting for four-five percent of the company’s total sales.
Vegan range
Dr Martens’ vegan range includes an array of shoes, sandals, boots, and accessories including a faux-leather backpack, cardholder, purse, and satchel.
The company told Well Made Clothes it understood veganism was a ‘conscious choice not be compromised’, adding: “Therefore, the Vegan range maintains the brand’s renowned reputation for comfort, style, and durability.
“Our collection replicates the signature footwear down to the very last detail, with the original air-cushioned sole, the famous yellow welt stitching, and our iconic heel loop.”
