A Black-owned vegan haircare brand bagged investment from entrepreneur Sara Davies. This is since appearing on the UK reality show, Dragon’s Den.
The company, Nylah’s Naturals, produces natural products for Afro and textured hair and announced it can now expand its vegan range.
Dragon’s Den investment
CEO and founder Kam Davis made the pitch on the BBC show this week.
In a statement sent to Plant Based News, she said: “By pitching my project to the Den, I was hoping to not just receive the investment. But, create a path for other aspiring entrepreneurs who are from a similar background.
“Nylah’s Naturals has always been about authenticity and diversity. And I hope to raise awareness about those groups of entrepreneurs who have been systematically underfunded.”
Vegan hair products
The all-vegan range includes a Strength And Shine Thickening Shampoo and Super Botantical’s Restorative Conditioner. Additionally, there is a Retention Leave-In Cream, and Super Seed Hair Oil.
In addition to being cruelty-free and vegan, each product is also free from parabens and synthetic fragrances.
Black-owned business
Upon sharing the news, Kam added that Black entrepreneurs experience lower funding opportunities. This is according to recent research published by the non-profit diversity organization, Extend Ventures.
Teams comprising of all Black and Multi-Ethnic members raised considerably less than their white counterparts, it found.
As a result, Kam says she will use the investment to ‘spark important conversations’ about beauty standards and diversity.
Additionally, she will invest in research and development to grow the vegan line.
