Luxury clothing brand Diane von Furstenberg (DVF) has confirmed it will no longer use fur or angora.

The New York-based designer, which banned mohair in July, has also committed to no longer producing goods using exotic-animal skins following a year-long campaign by vegan charity PETA.

Compassionate decision

“PETA is toasting DVF’s compassionate, business-savvy decision to scrap fur and angora,” said PETA Director Elisa Allen.

“DVF is the latest in a long line of fashion brands to recognize that fur is dead, and PETA is calling on any out-of-touch retailer still selling coats, collars, and cuffs made from tormented animals to get with the times and do the same.”

The charity adds that many animals on fur farms ‘spend their entire lives confined to filthy wire cages so cramped that they can take only a few steps in any direction’.

Dropping fur

DVF joins a number of top designers and retailers in banning fur, including Burberry, Gucci, Michael Kors, and Versace.

Donatella Versace announced she will no longer use fur in her designs earlier this year. The designer made the comments in an interview with The Economist’s 1843 magazine.

She said: “Fur? I am out of that. I don’t want to kill animals to make fashion. It doesn’t feel right.”
