Plant Based News (PBN) annual short film, VEGAN 2021, recaps the year and brings to light the astronomical growth of the vegan movement.

2021 started with a bang, with a dizzying nearly half a million people signing up for Veganuary.

Throughout the year, plant-based meat companies forged partnerships with the biggest names in the food industry, like McDonald’s, Subway, and Dominos, to name a few.

A host of high-profile names spoke out about animal exploitation, including Grammy Award-winner Billie Eilish and Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, who are both vegan.

Corporations shelled out millions of dollars to place behind alternative protein start-ups, and communities around the globe rallied together to help protect the planet from the climate emergency

Klaus Mitchell, director of the PBN annual film series and founder of PBN, said the new short film arrived at just the right time.

He explained: “More people than ever are paying attention to the vegan movement, and VEGAN 2021 highlights why.

“This short film sheds light on the growing awareness of plant-based living, and why picking up the lifestyle is easier, simpler, and more important than ever before.”

A new documentary is exposing the fashion industry for its greenwashing and treatment of animals.

Produced by Keegan Kuhn (known for his work on 2017’s What the Health and Cowspiracy), SLAY follows filmmaker Rebecca Cappelli’s journey around the world, investigating the animal skin trade.

Cappelli—who also worked on the 2018 food-focused documentary Let us be Heroes—traveled to Australia, China, India, Europe, the US, and Brazil to film at leather tanneries, fur farms, wool farms, and skin processors.

“I have spent the last three years investigating animal skins in fashion,” Cappelli says in the film’s trailer. “They have a damaging impact on the planet, on people, and, of course, on the animals.”

“If someone would have told me even half of what I discovered doing this film, I wouldn’t have believed them.”

Cruelty in fashion

More brands are banning animal skins (fur bans, in particular, have become popular among luxury brands, as public opinion turns on the trade), but fashion is still far from cruelty-free.

According to the documentary, around 2.5 billion animals are killed for fashion every year. Around 1.4 billion of those in the leather industry. (Leather isn’t limited to cows; pigs, kangaroos, buffalo, alligators, and snakes are also killed for their skins.)

But Cappelli hopes that her film will drive change.

SLAY’s Indiegogo page, which hopes to raise almost £50,000 to promote the film, reads: “Through our collective efforts, films like Cowspiracy and What the Health have had a huge global impact – and we can do this again.”

“We want this film to reach a mainstream audience to accelerate change thanks to existing solutions.”

Innovation in fashion is improving, and the plant-based leather industry, in particular, is becoming more mainstream.

For example, in 2021, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams teamed up with Coperni to design a range of bags made from apple leather. Also last year, Ganni pledged to ditch leather completely, and instead use grape-based leather to make its shoes.

At the time, the brand’s founder Nicolaj Reffstrup said: “Selling leather products, although highly profitable, will soon be as outdated as smoking on TV.”

SLAY wants to make that prediction come true as soon as possible. Click here to find out more about the project, and donate to its fundraiser.

Leonardo DiCaprio is using his Instagram platform to promote the climate crisis documentary Eating Our Way to Extinction.

Narrated by Kate Winslet—DiCaprio’s good friend and onscreen co-star (the duo worked together in 1997’s Titanic and then again in 2008’s Revolutionary Road)—the documentary seeks to wake viewers up to a harsh truth. Animal agriculture is destroying the planet and humanity.

The film features an appearance from Sir Richard Branson (the billionaire has invested in vegan and cultured meat brands). Philanthropist Tony Robbins is also included, as well as renowned marine biologist Sylvia Earle.

In an Earth Day post, DiCaprio posted a trailer for the documentary to his 53 million Instagram followers. He added the caption: “Watch Eating Our Way To Extinction on @primevideo to learn how we can change our path.”

https://www.instagram.com/reel/CcqOjyUDSbt/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Inspiring people to take the climate crisis seriously

The actor is passionate about fighting the climate crisis. He has created his own documentaries to raise awareness of global warming, like 2016’s Before the Flood. He frequently invests in sustainable, plant-based brands (vegan snack company Hippeas, for example). Plus, he uses his platform to advocate for climate action.

In 2016, DiCaprio received the Academy Award for Best Actor in The Revenant. In his acceptance speech, DiCaprio spoke of the need to take climate crisis action seriously. The next day, Google searches for “climate change” rose 261 percent.

Using the power of cinematography combined with harrowing testimonials (including the perspectives of indigenous people who live in some of the most climate crisis-impacted areas of the world), Eating Our Way to Extinction intends to have a similar effect on viewers.

Last year, director Otto Brockway and producer Mark Galvin told Plant Based News: “Most of the modern world has somewhat lost that connection to nature and to the planet in some way.”

“[Indigenous] people very much still live in tune with nature and they see the cycles of the Earth and the cycles around them that have been relatively stable for hundreds and maybe even thousands of years – suddenly changing.”

Among other issues, the hard-hitting documentary focuses on ocean dead zones, greenhouse gasses, deforestation, species extinction, and plastic pollution, all of which can be tied back to animal agriculture.

Eating Our Way to Extinction is available to stream on Prime Video.

Highly anticipated documentary MILKED has finally arrived, and can be watched now via Plant Based News.

Years in the making, the feature-length film dives deep into the darkest corners of the dairy industry, in an attempt to uproot the picture-perfect narrative carefully constructed by animal agriculture’s largest organizations.

In MILKED, activist Chris Huriwai travels Aotearoa (the Māori name for New Zealand), speaking to experts in medicine, ecology, politics, and business in search of answers.

“We originally planned to investigate the environmental and health impacts of all animal agriculture in Aotearoa. But once we got further into researching, it was obvious that dairy was the story to tell,” MILKED director and producer Amy Taylor said.

And that story isn’t as idyllic as it’s often made out to be. Alongside disturbing animal welfare violations, the dairy industry is to blame for excessive water and land use, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions, the film explains.

That’s part of the reason why the team behind MILKED launched a petition alongside the film’s release. The petition urges for a global reduction in dairy herds – by at least 25 percent – over the next three years.

There are four variations of the petition: one each for the United Kingdom, the United States, Europe, and New Zealand. Those interested can sign the petition(s) here.

With input from the likes of Dame Jane Goodall, Suzy Amis Cameron, and Keegan Kuhn – and supported by Academy Award-winning director James Cameron – MILKED had people talking weeks before its release.

When the documentary creators launched a crowdfunding campaign to help get the concept off the ground, it took just 12 days for contributors to put forward $NZD100,000.

As a result, the team upped the goal by $20,000, with plans to use the funds for the film’s production itself, but also activist campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the dairy sector’s environmental impact.

Adobe Stock MILKED argues that the dairy sector has not been transparent with consumers.

The funding will also go towards government lobbying initiatives, and will provide financial support for farmers exiting the dairy industry in favor of animal-free work.

“We’re so grateful for the incredible support we’ve already received from around the world,” Taylor commented. “It shows how many people are passionate about exposing the truth about the dairy industry, and looking at a better way forward.”

A new feature documentary called MILKED launched a petition today that aims to bring together the masses of people who are eager to protect the planet and its inhabitants. Specifically, by dismantling the destructive systems used by the dairy industry.

MILKED – which will soon be available to watch via Plant Based News – takes a deep dive into the dairy sector of Aotearoa (the Māori name for New Zealand). The country is the largest exporter of dairy in the world.

Alongside the film’s premiere, the creators of MILKED have published four variations of a petition that aims to reduce global dairy herds by 25 percent in next three years.

The petitions – aimed at the UK, the US, Europe, and New Zealand – are directed at each country’s leaders. MILKED hopes that global collective efforts can help create a more sustainable food system. And, one that protects the lives of millions of animals too.

The problem with dairy

MILKED acknowledges that the dairy industry is widely considered a “source of national pride.”

But behind the curtain, the industry is said to be damaging the country more than benefiting it.

The dairy sector is Aotearoa’s largest water polluter. And it doesn’t just pollute water, it uses excessive amounts of it too. According to MILKED, 1,000 liters of water is required to produce just one liter of cow’s milk.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yBv-8P1gmY

Plant-based alternatives are often a different story. Oat milk, for example, uses 13 times less water and 11 times less land than cow’s milk, the organization says.

Further, oat milk generates 3.5 times fewer carbon emissions. New Zealand’s dairy industry is currently producing almost a quarter of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions on its own. Although MILKED calls this figure a “conservative estimate.”

Perhaps more conceringly, the country’s largest dairy company, Fonterra, is projected to exceed New Zealand’s total national emissions target in the coming decade.

Filmmakers discovered that Fonterra – which initially agreed to an interview but then pulled out – has been underreporting its environmental data.

In one case, Fonterra reported 22 million tons of emission output, when the actual figure was double that. In total, the dairy company is to blame for more emissions than the whole of Sweden.

MILKED stresses that despite industry efforts to sequester carbon, this does not address the expulsion of methane from cows. Notably, methane is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

The new film brings such statistics to light through interviews with high-profile figures like Dame Jane Goodall, environmentalist and actor Suzy Amis Cameron, and Cowspiracy co-director Keegan Kuhn. Academy Award-winning director James Cameron has labeled the film a “powerful wake-up call.”

During MILKED, filmmakers follow activist Chris Huriwai around the country as he speaks with experts in ecology, medicine, and economy, as well as local dairy farmers.

Aside from sustainability concerns, Huriwai takes a closer look at the ethical, animal welfare, and health implications of dairy consumption.

“We originally planned to investigate the environmental and health impacts of all animal agriculture in Aotearoa. But once we got further into researching, it was obvious that dairy was the story to tell,” MILKED director and producer Amy Taylor explained.

Inviting the public to help bolster the documentary’s message, MILKED launched a crowdfunding campaign with a goal of $NZD100,000. Contributors helped the organization exceed the figure in just 12 days, motivating MILKED to extend the funding goal.

Those interested can sign MILKED’s petition to reduce global dairy herds here.

MILKED will be available to watch on Plant Based NewsYouTube channel from March 25, 2022 at 7pm (GMT), or March 26 from 8am (NZDT).

The free streaming platform, WaterBear, which is “dedicated to the future of our planet,” has launched an impact marketing campaign to help protect sharks. As part of this, the company has added the popular Sharkwater trilogy to its collection.

Produced and directed by late Canadian filmmaker and conservationist Rob Stewart, the trilogy features his three documentaries: Sharkwater (2006), Revolution (2012) and Sharkwater Extinction (2018)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2If9lYEWv0&ab_channel=WaterBear

From debunking historical stereotypes and exposing the massive illegal shark finning industry, to challenging the media-driven vilification of sharks, the documentaries aim to highlight the threats the shark population faces on a daily basis.

Driven by passion fed by a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart dedicated his career to raising awareness about the receding population of sharks.

His films have gained more than 70 international awards and have been viewed by over 125 million people worldwide. His work has also helped trigger changes in law and government policy – more than 90 countries have now banned shark finning or the trade of shark products.

Alarming statistics

However, many countries continue to kill the animals – over 100 million sharks are killed around the world every year. Though researchers estimate the true number could be as high as 273 million.

Global shark populations have already declined by 71 percent over the last 50 years. Considering this, researchers believe there is an unprecedented rise in the risk of extinction.

Siren call for action

The Sharkwater trilogy serves as a siren call for action. It’s a stark reminder that sharks are in danger of extinction, and they could easily be wiped out within a few years due to human interference.

In his third documentary, Sharkwater Extinction, Stewart said, “I thought that if I could change the public’s view of sharks, if I could make them love these animals like I did… see that they’re beautiful and amazing and magnificent and important, people would then also want to fight for their protection.”

In a statement, Josh Blau, head of acquisitions at WaterBear, said: “Rob Stewart is an inspiration, and we want to honor his legacy and work by shining a spotlight on this devastating issue and encourage our members to take action.”

In collaboration with Sea Shepherd and Parley for the Oceans, WaterBear is encouraging those who watch the documentary to support the “Nets out Now” petition. The petition calls for the removal of nets and drum lines to help put an end to Australia’s 84-year-old shark culls.

To watch the Sharkwater trilogy, as well as other award-winning documentaries that focus on shaping a better future for our fragile planet, head over to WaterBear’s website where you can stream the videos at any time and on any device, all for free.

Upcoming feature-length documentary MILKED, which unearths the environmental and animal welfare repercussions of the dairy industry, has eclipsed its crowdfunding goal of $NZD100,000. And, it took just 12 days.

In response, the team behind the movie have increased their goal by $20,000 to help amplify the message further. Additionally, an anonymous donor has committed to matching funds up to $100,000. So, every dollar donated so far will be doubled.

James Cameron: a ‘wake-up call’

MILKED pulls back the curtain on Aotearoa’s (the Māori name for New Zealand) dairy industry. The country is the largest exporter of dairy in the world.

The film includes interviews from the likes of renowned ethologist Dame Jane Goodall and Cowspiracy co-director Keegan Kuhn. Environmentalist and actor Suzy Amis Cameron also features in the movie.

Cameron’s partner, Academy Award-winning director James Cameron, has placed his support behind the project too. He said the film is a “powerful wake-up call that the world is getting MILKED.”

The movie follows activist Chris Huriwai as he travels the country to learn more about the industry. There, Huriwai speaks directly to dairy farmers as well as experts in the fields of medicine, economy, ecology, and politics.

“We originally planned to investigate the environmental and health impacts of all animal agriculture in Aotearoa. But once we got further into researching, it was obvious that dairy was the story to tell,” MILKED director and producer Amy Taylor said.

“And with dairy giant Fonterra inviting Chris to meet with them and then backing out, we became even more curious about what was going on.”

The dairy industry has come under fire in recent years over ethical concerns.

Funding goals

The funds already raised by MILKED will go towards final edits, paying contractors and producers, and legal counsel. It will also help fund marketing, including media stunts like the recently erected billboards that “congratulate” the dairy industry on being Aotearoa’s largest polluter.

The crowdfunding earnings will also help create an educational version of the film. This copy will be distributed to various schools and universities.

Further, the money will help develop impact campaigns, including those supporting farmers who are transitioning out of the dairy industry. And, lobbying for the government to remove dairy from schools and nutritional guidelines in favor of a plant-based focus.

MILKED Campaign Launch
The team smashed their crowdfunding goal in less than two weeks.

The stretch goal of $20,000 will be used to produce new content from the more than 100 hours of interviews conducted for MILKED. It will also go towards the production of a short film about a dairy farmer moving out of animal agriculture.

“We’re so grateful for the incredible support we’ve already received from around the world having only just launched our crowdfunding campaign,” said director Taylor. “It shows how many people are passionate about exposing the truth about the dairy industry, and looking at a better way forward.”

The film drops on March 18 via WaterBear, the first free streaming network “dedicated to the future of our planet,” and will be hosted for free on Plant Based News from March 26.

A group of bold women walk the streets in lingerie to raise awareness of animal cruelty in a brand new short documentary broadcast on UnchainedTV, the all-vegan streaming TV network.

The Lingerie Protest features Australian Dita Von Teese model and activist Stefania Ferrario, who wanted to draw attention to the cruelty animals face.

In the documentary she said: “Unfortunately animals in animal agriculture have no bodily autonomy so for us to use our bodies to spread awareness was incredibly powerful.”

Fueled by the lack of news coverage about the devastation of animal agriculture, Ferrario teamed up with fellow activist and vegan influencer Tash Peterson.

They wanted to get the public’s attention and wake people up by whatever means necessary.

Wearing nothing but lingerie and holding provocative signs, the two women brought together a group of vegan influencers who took to the streets of Melbourne to share their message.

This started a wave of similar animal rights protests around the world.

Now women (and some men) are braving the streets of major cities in the US, Europe, and Asia in defense of animals, carrying signs with slogans such as “stop abusing animals” and “stop breastfeeding from cows.” The documentary is a collaboration between UnchainedTV and New York-based production company CaveLight Films.

Doing anything it takes to defend animals

Vegan women protesting animal cruelty
UnchainedTV Women from around the world came together to protest animal exploitation.

This isn’t the first time these women have stood up for animals. Last year, Ferrario worked with PETA Australia on a campaign encouraging consumers to “leave wool behind.”

She appeared on billboards and in videos sharing the reality of Australia’s wool industry, where 70-80 percent of merino lambs are still mulesed, sometimes without pain relief.

Mulesing is a surgical procedure that removes four strips of perineal skin to prevent a parasite infection known as flystrike.

In one PETA video Ferrario described the abuse at sheep shearing facilities in the country as “rampant.”

The international model has worked with some of the biggest fashion labels including Dita Von Teese, Myer, Target, and Berlei.

She is said to have a clause in her contract stating she won’t wear any animal-derived materials in advertisements.

Meanwhile, Peterson is notorious for activism in Australia and online, where she’s known by the name Vgan Bootyy on Instagram. Peterson made headlines in 2021 after entering a Louis Vuitton store in Perth wearing nothing but panties.

She was reported to have said she was protesting against cruelty in the leather, wool, and fur industries.

Global protests

The protests taking place for the UnchainedTV mini series have already reached millions and helped spark important conversations around the world.

Not all protestors were able to walk the streets in lingerie though. In Japan, where there is a risk of being arrested for such an act, the women participating chose to wear Santa costumes instead.

The seven-minute pilot episode, available free for subscribers to the UnchainedTV network, raises questions about animal welfare, the climate crisis, body autonomy, and woman empowerment.

It includes high quality footage of the global lingerie protests and interviews with Ferrario, as well as high-profile protestors who took part in New York, Tokyo, and Switzerland.

Renowned vegan content

Those tuning into UnchainedTV will also gain access to classic vegan movies, including Earthlings, Countdown to Year Zero, The Invisible Vegan, and Vegucated. But also cutting-edge climate campaigns.

Viewers will find plant-based recipes and profiles for some of the world’s most successful vegan business leaders and plant-powered athletes.

The post Jane Goodall Becomes Narrator Of Cultured Meat Documentary ‘Meat The Future’ appeared first on Plant Based News.

]]>
Renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall has placed her support behind the cultured meat industry, agreeing to narrate a documentary on the topic, called Meat the Future

Cultured meat (also called cell-based or clean meat) is animal meat that is produced by directly cultivating animal cells. The technology allows for real meat to be created without harming animals.

‘Meat the Future’

Meat the Future is an 88-minute documentary that follows the journey of cultured meat start-up Upside Foods (previously Memphis Meats).

In 2016, Upside Foods presented the world’s first cultured beef meatball. It cost $18,000 per pound. And, the following year, the start-up produced the first-ever cultured chicken fillet and duck a l’orange for half the cost.

The film follows the work of Mayo Clinic-trained cardiologist Dr. Uma Valeti, Co-founder and CEO of Upside Foods, and his team over a five-year period.

As well as exploring the intricacies of the industry – such as consumer perception and regulatory barriers – the film presents cultured meat as a solution to the environmental damage caused by animal meat production.

Experts have repeatedly identified animal agriculture as a leading driver of deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, air and water pollution, and biodiversity loss.

‘The story of planetary hope’

Goodall, now 87, has worked as a primatologist for more than six decades. In 1977, she founded the Jane Goodall Institute, a global wildlife and conservation organization. She has been a UN Messenger of Peace since 2002.

“This is the story of planetary hope – inspired by one of the biggest ideas of the century,” Goodall says in the film.

Meat the Future premiered at the 2020 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.

Now, the film has been updated to include new information about cultured meat as well as Goodall’s narration. Music from vegan artist Moby, who is now an executive producer of the film, was added to the documentary too.

“I’m excited about the documentary because it is solution-focused,” Goodall said in a statement. “The film proposes a way forward, to reduce methane, to reduce water and land use, to lessen the suffering of animals, and to prevent future viral outbreaks. I hope it sparks your imagination and inspires change.”

After years of planning, research, and collaboration, the highly anticipated documentary, Eating Our Way to Extinction, was released today.

The cinematic feature documentary explores the environmental impact of diet. Specifically, bringing to light the destruction caused by animal agriculture in various corners of the world. For example, the Amazon rainforest, the Mongolian desert, the Taiwanese Mountains, and the US Dust Bowl.

The film’s producer Mark Galvin and its editor Otto Brockway spoke to Plant Based News about the project.

“Documentaries are an incredibly powerful tool to create social change,” they told PBN Founder and Director Klaus Mitchell.

“I think something that we found incredibly frustrating is this subject and this story is left out of the debate so many times. Even at the latest COP meeting up in Scotland that they’re having at the moment, it’s still kind of taking the sideline,” they explained. “I think the sad thing and the frustrating thing is it’s not actually representing the science.”

Expert involvement

The filmmakers spoke to leading scientists and high-profile figures about the issue.

Actor Kate Winslet narrates the film, and is also the executive director. Virgin Group’s Sir Richard Branson, former UN Special Rapporteur Olivier de Schutter, former Chief of NOAA Sylvia Earle, and philanthropist Tony Robbins feature in the film too.

Physician Dr Michael Greger and NHS doctor Dr Gemma Newma are also involved, as well as specialists in nutrition, haematology, water management, economics, agriculture, virology, and arctic ice.

The filmmakers also spoke to Indigenous people in South America and Brazil, who are most affected by the climate crisis. Brockway and Galvin felt that it ‘would be really powerful’ to include those voices which are often not heard.

“Most of the modern world has somewhat lost that connection to nature and to the planet in some way,” they explained. “[Indigenous] people very much still live in tune with nature and they see the cycles of the Earth and the cycles around them that have been relatively stable for hundreds and maybe even thousands of years – suddenly changing.”

“And in such a way that to them they perceive it as violent. And you can see the fear in their eyes when they talk about it,” they added.

But people are becoming more aware of the crisis, and thinking twice about what’s on their plate. This may be why Eating Our Way to Extinction reached #1 on the iTunes documentary chart in the UK based on pre-orders alone. Further, it snagged a spot in the top 10 on the global charts, the team said.

Eating Our Way to Extinction is available now on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and VUDU. The documentary can be viewed in nearly 15 languages.
