UK supermarket Morrisons is launching what it describes as the UK’s first vegan pork pie.
According to the retail giant, it has created the ‘No Pork’ Pie because its meaty counterpart is a ‘British classic loved by many people’, but ‘it is a distant memory for vegans and vegetarians because of its combination of pork, jelly and butter pastry’.
Morrisons says its vegan version replicates the pork pie through its meaty taste, crumbly pastry texture, and classic appearance. This recipe is such a closely-guarded secret only six Morrisons staff know it.
Vegan pork pie
“So many people across the UK are fond of eating a pork pie at Christmas,” Morrisons Pie Buyer, Steven Halford, said in a statement sent to Plant Based News.
“Our vegan and vegetarian customers previously couldn’t enjoy a pork pie, but with our new meat-free product they can enjoy a great tasting alternative.”
The Morrisons Vegan ‘No Pork’ Pie will launch on December 9. They will be baked by Morrisons at its pie shop counters and will retail at £1.75 or two for £3.
