How To Keep Fit And Healthy During Self-Isolation

There’s a building pressure to be productive during self-isolation.

People are plastering how busy they’ve been on social media, with some redecorating their entire house and building an extension,  others learning three new languages and ghost-writing an autobiography.

But, now more than ever is the time to prioritize ourselves and make sure we keep fit and healthy – both physically and mentally. And here are some simple tips to help.

1. Educate yourself

Now is the perfect opportunity to invest your time in your health. But if flicking through a bunch of nutrition journals seems pretty daunting, why not attend the 2020 Food Revolution event?

It’s a completely free nine-day conference, running. from April 25 – May 3, featuring 25 of the world’s most trusted food and nutrition experts (including Dr. Greger and Dr. Barnard)

The summit will present the most up-to-date research and information about food, nutrition, disease prevention, immune health, and environmental stewardship.

You can sign up to attend the free event here

2. Eat well

The science is clear. No diet can prevent you from contracting the coronavirus (COVID 19) – the British Dietetic Association states good hygiene remains the best means of avoiding infection.

And while veganism is certainly not the ‘perfect cure’ – it could still be beneficial. A recent study published in Nutrition Reviews found eating plant-based can ‘help prevent asthma and manage symptoms’ while foods high in saturated fat, including dairy, were found to worsen asthma and increase one’s odds of developing the condition.

“Asthma can make people more vulnerable in the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and this research offers hope that dietary changes could be helpful,” said researcher Hana Kahleova from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in the US.

3. Keep taking your medications and supplements

With routine out of the window, it’s easy to forget about your medication or supplements. But remember, vitamin B12 is vital on a plant-based diet, and if you’re no longer able to get much time outdoors, you might also want to take a vitamin D3 supplement.

You can join up to Feel to get a monthly subscription of multivitamins delivered straight through your door. Use code ‘PBN50‘ to get your first box (usually £11.95) for half price!

And if you’re worried about deficiencies during quarantine, you can also get a testing kit delivered straight through your door from LetsGetChecked. You’ll get CLIA lab accredited results in two-five days from the comfort of your home. Use PBN20 at checkout for 20 percent off.

However, if you’re not a big fan of intense gym workouts – it’s still important to keep physically active. Whether that be making the most of your daily exercise allowance and going for a brisk walk or jog, or dancing in your room with your music on full – there’s plenty of ways to make exercise more fun!

5. Connect with people

It’s important to be aware of your relationship with social media during self-isolation – it can be difficult to stop yourself aimlessly scrolling through Facebook and spending hours watching repeats of Friends on Netflix.

But, it’s good to stay connected with friends and family to help your mental health, especially if you’re feeling scared or anxious about the current pandemic.

Try arranging weekly video chats with your loved ones, or simply pick up the phone and call your friends for a half-hour. Remember, it’s ‘Physical isolation – not social isolation‘.

Stay Safe, and stay healthy!
