I’d be curious to know exactly why you believe Ian Tolhurst’s farming methods would not be scalable. When there is, after all, a thriving global network of veganic farmers out there. It was also the traditional way of farming in Mesoamerica and supported vast populations.

I trust you believe in a farming system that does not rely on external inputs. Such as soy meal from Bazile or synthetic fertilizer from Russia. I also hope you understand that we need to stop using agricultural land to grow biodiesel or food for animals.

Hi Matt, Yes I’ve known about Ian Tolhurst for many years. Excellent smallholder/ farmer. I don’t have the time right now but I’ll give you a breakdown on his system soon.

Can be an excellent system for urban gardens, allotments, small holdings etc. Not deemed viable or economically feasible for larger scale operations. Major drawbacks are: Requires reasonably good soils to start with, poor topsoil generator on marginal land, labour intensive, impossible to run as zero input, can require green manure tillage, fallow land not productive.

I was brought up with permaculture and “organics” and I will always support it, but the reality is you cant run it on a 5,000 hectare farm.

I’m sure the people at the Veganic Agriculture Network would disagree with you.

Where do you imagine the nitrogen in animal manure comes from Rowland? Bacteria take it out of the air. Plants get it from the bacteria. Animals eat the plants.

Of course we can use green manure to improve soils. You don’t need to run those chemicals through an animal first. That’s just an attempt to greenwash animal husbandry.

How many veganic operations have you observed?

I don’t believe that animal husbandry is necessary for long term soil health, I KNOW IT IS, 50yrs involvement in conservation and land management plus constant contact with the farming community and agronomists tell me all I want to know. I do not allow my personal views to influence the facts ( I don’t eat agricultural produce! ) but most people do.

So your belief that animal husbandry is necessary for sustainable agriculture is in no way related to your belief that meat consumption is necessary? I’m not buying it.

And omega 3 is a non issue if you eat a variety of whole plant foods.

Medication or supplements may be necessary in certain circumstances. But should be a last resort, not a first option.

I don’t agree with or take supplements or medication. Neither are necessary.
