One sizzling debate about nutrition – aired on the talk show The Doctors – created so much controversy that YouTube took it down.

The segment, which referenced data from documentary What the Health, saw Dr. Robert Lustig, a neuroendocrinologist who advocates for low-carb diets, go head-to-head with Dr. Garth Davis, a bariatric surgeon and physician.

They discuss whether plant-based diets are healthier than animal products, whether meat is really killing us, and if industry-funded studies are just muddying the waters of medical research.

With this exclusive re-upload, watch see these doctors thrash out their arguments.

Plant Based News (PBN) annual short film, VEGAN 2021, recaps the year and brings to light the astronomical growth of the vegan movement.

2021 started with a bang, with a dizzying nearly half a million people signing up for Veganuary.

Throughout the year, plant-based meat companies forged partnerships with the biggest names in the food industry, like McDonald’s, Subway, and Dominos, to name a few.

A host of high-profile names spoke out about animal exploitation, including Grammy Award-winner Billie Eilish and Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, who are both vegan.

Corporations shelled out millions of dollars to place behind alternative protein start-ups, and communities around the globe rallied together to help protect the planet from the climate emergency

Klaus Mitchell, director of the PBN annual film series and founder of PBN, said the new short film arrived at just the right time.

He explained: “More people than ever are paying attention to the vegan movement, and VEGAN 2021 highlights why.

“This short film sheds light on the growing awareness of plant-based living, and why picking up the lifestyle is easier, simpler, and more important than ever before.”

Do you have questions about how to maximise the nutritional benefits of cruciferous vegetables? What about whether there are benefits to eating organic vegan?

In this Plant Based News video, top plant-based medic Dr. Michael Greger tackles a huge range of nutrition questions, offering a number of top hacks.

Dr. Greger is a medical doctor, best-selling author, internationally acclaimed speaker and advocate of plant-based nutrition.

Plant Based Nutrition

The video features footage from two Q&A sessions, in which he discusses a wide range of his audiences’ dietary concerns, offering indispensable advice for good health and longevity.

One of the topics he handles is how patties like the Impossible and Beyond burgers compare to meat. Discussing key nutrients, he said: “Actually, Impossible comes out pretty far ahead because they add nutrients back. But there are lots of nutrients they’re missing. The key one is fiber.”

He added that the companies want to ‘match or even exceed’ the amount of protein in beef, as the macronutrient has become such a buzzword. “So I think a quarter pound patty of burger, if I remember correctly, has 18g of protein whereas Impossible and Beyond have 20g.”

E poi? Tutto dentro i macros. . . Fate attenzione a quelle 2 cose che contano. This exclusive Plant Based News video features footage of top bariatric surgeon Dr. Garth Davis talking about a study of the people with the longest life expectancy.

Dr. Davis cited a study called the Blue Zones by National Geographic and Dan Buettner. They looked around the world for the people that had the longest life expectancy, that would live over 100.

He said that many people don’t want to live to 100 because of the images we see of elderly people in western society. But, he says, people of this age in Blue Zones are ‘still an active part of society…still living very fulfilling, happy lives’.

‘No obesity’

According to Dr. Davis: “When you look at these places, they don’t have obesity, they don’t have diabetes, they don’t have heart disease, if they do, it’s very, very low. All of them, there’s no me there, there’s no physician that’s treating obesity there, it just doesn’t exist.

“Let’s look at Okinawa where they have unbelievable longevity – or they did, it’s getting worse over time. What are they eating mainly? Are they mainly eating protein? No, they’re mainly eating yams actually.

“If you look at their diet, it’s very, very high in starches, 70 percent of it is yams…That’s the vast majority of what they eat. They eat rice, they eat fruits, they eat vegetables. How much dairy and meat do they eat? [Only] about one percent of their calories come from those different things.

“The vast majority of their diet is a plant-based diet. They’re not vegan or vegetarian, they don’t have these names and concepts, that is just what they mainly eat. And if you look at them over time, a traditional Okinawan starts off low and actually loses weight as they get older compared to American who gains weight.”

‘Unfortunately changing’

He added that ‘the Okinawan diet is unfortunately changing and because of that, so are their waistlines’. “We’re moving to Okinawa and it’s a big problem because as they start adopting our diet, they start getting our disease processes.”

Another Blue Zone is Sardinia. And there is even a Blue Zone in the States – the Seventh Day Adventists in Loma Linda, California.

“Probably the healthiest of all the blue zones is Loma Linda,” said Dr. Davis. “And if you’ve ever been to Loma Linda, it doesn’t look that healthy,

there’s still McDonald’s everywhere. But the reason is the Seventh Day Adventists by religion believe that the body is the temple of the soul and should therefore be treated with respect.

“So they don’t drink, and they don’t smoke, and they try to eat to be healthy…when you look at what they do, they eat lots of fruits, they eat lots of vegetables, they walk a lot and they’re pretty healthy.”

WATCH: U.S Government Ignores Alarming Lactose Intolerance Dairy Data https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/us-government-ignores-lactose-intolerance-dairy-data/ Tue, 04 Aug 2020 09:40:39 +0000 http://ci026bbe2a80002568 The post WATCH: U.S Government Ignores Alarming Lactose Intolerance Dairy Data appeared first on Plant Based News.

A U.S government body has ignored data illustrating the alarming rates of lactose intolerance in the States while compiling a cornerstone nutritional report which will inform the next five years of federal dietary guidance.

This exclusive Plant Based News video suggests the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s (DGAC) scientific report, which was compiled by the Committee’s 20 health expert members, ‘presents a narrow misleading picture of the effect of milk on health’.

The report will be used by the USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

‘Alarming lactose intolerance dairy data’

“The USDA Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) published a highly anticipated report, but ignored alarming lactose intolerance dairy data,” PBN founder Klaus Mitchell says in the video.

The video shares data showing that 65 percent of the global population is lactose intolerant, according to the National Institute of Health, with this number being even higher among non-white populations, including Asians, blacks, and Hispanics.

But the newly updated recommendations state we should all be consuming three glasses of milk or other low-fat dairy foods per day, despite that fact that between 75 percent and 90 percent of people with African, Native American, and Asian heritage have lactose intolerance – which was not addressed in the new guidelines.

‘Astonishing’

According to Mitchell, the dairy recommendations in the report make it ‘painfully obvious…that the authors opted for tunnel vision stating in adults, the role of milk in adiposity was the sole focus of this review.’

“So in other words, they ignored anything other than what milk makes you fat. For children, they also considered whether it helped them grow, but nothing besides that, which is astonishing. By disregarding other factors, they present a narrow misleading picture of the effect of milk on health,” he says.

“Even about taking into consideration the diseases that dairy contributes to, the USDA’s own data about the proportion of ethnic minority people that have lactose intolerant should be enough to take dairy completely off the menu, especially when humans don’t need it.”

WATCH: Dr. T. Colin Campbell Criticizes Idea That ‘The Fat You Eat Is The Fat You Wear’ https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/t-colin-campbell-criticizes-fat-you-eat-fat-you-wear/ Wed, 22 Jul 2020 10:27:39 +0000 http://ci026aacb7e000253b The post WATCH: Dr. T. Colin Campbell Criticizes Idea That ‘The Fat You Eat Is The Fat You Wear’ appeared first on Plant Based News.

]]>

Acclaimed plant-based expert Dr. T Colin Campbell has criticized the idea that ‘the fat you eat is the fat you wear’.

The notion is popular with the pioneering Dr. John McDougall, who has said that ‘the body does the most efficient thing possible with fat’ and ‘just moves it from the fork and spoon to your abdominal fat stores, from my lips to my hips’.

But in a recent interview with his son Nelson Campbell, Dr. T Colin Campbell dismissed this notion, saying ‘it doesn’t work that way biochemically’ and ‘we should not be making that statement’.

Fat

During his interview, Nelson Campbell asked his father: “I hear a lot of people advocating against the consumption of whole foods like nuts, seeds, avocados, and coconuts. What do you think about that and this notion of the fat you eat is the fat you wear?”

Dr. T. Colin Campbell replied: “First off, the fat you eat is the fat you wear, that’s a very superficial comment to make. It doesn’t work that way biochemically, we should not be making that statement, first off.”

Whole foods

He added: “Secondly, what we talk about that may be problematic is the added oil isolated from the whole food. The food itself, like nuts and seeds and so forth and so on, there’s a reason for nature putting that in there. It enables them to get a kickstart when they start growing new plants, as an aside. But to say that the whole food is the problem also is not correct.

“In fact, the evidence shows that nuts, lot of evidence, very convincing evidence, that nuts if anything, have a benefit. They’re rich in vitamin E, for example, and I’ve known that for decades. A lot of us in the business have known that. And to eat nuts, of course, is higher in fat for a specific reason. We don’t want to just make a whole meal just of nuts and seeds, quite frankly, but that’s good food and evidence shows it’s good food. It’s that simple.”

WATCH: Fish Is Not A Health Food – Here’s Why https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/video-fish-not-health-food/ Tue, 21 Jul 2020 09:38:56 +0000 http://ci026a96d930002642 The post WATCH: Fish Is Not A Health Food – Here’s Why appeared first on Plant Based News.

]]>

Many people consider fish a healthier and more ethical option than other meats.

But this exclusive Plant Based News video shows how the science shows this is not the case.

Is fish a healthy food?

According to the video: “The reason some fish are promoted as a health food is that they contain more omega-three fats than any other species. You may have heard these being called oily fish, and these include mackerel, salmon, and sardines.

“Other fish, such as cod, store omega-threes mainly in their liver, which is why omega-three supplements use cod liver oil. We need omega three fats for our cell membranes, brain, and nervous system. They also play a role in blood pressure regulation, blood clotting, and have anti-inflammatory properties.

“And because we cannot make them ourselves, we must get them from our food. Fish contain two types of omega threes. They’re called EPA and DHA. The only reason fish contain these is because they eat microalgae producing these fats and then store them in their tissues. The long-held belief is that fish oil may help protect us from heart disease and stroke.

“But now research shows that eating oily fish or fish oil doesn’t offer any advantage when it comes to heart health. As a highly-respected Cochrane Review put it, moderate and high-quality evidence suggests that increasing EPA and DHA has little to no effect on mortality or cardiovascular health.”

Microalgae

The authors of this report point out that as a previous review essentially suggested the same, getting our omega threes directly from microalgae is a better alternative, as it reduces overfishing, environmental pollution, and doesn’t expose us to toxins in the fish.

“The good news is that there are plenty of algae-based omega-three supplements,” says the video. “And if you’d rather source your omega threes from plants, there’s more good news. A plant-based omega-three fat called ALA has been shown to decrease the risk of fatal heart disease. You can get plenty of ALA from flaxseed, chia seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, and rapeseed oil.

“The bottom line is omega threes are essential, but getting them from fish is neither necessary, nor is it good for you. Both freshwater and ocean fish live in waters polluted by industrial and agricultural residues, drugs, water products, and similar nasty substances. Fish naturally accumulate heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, lead, and pesticide residues in their fatty tissues. And that’s why we’re being warned against eating too much fish.”
