Record-breaking tennis pro Serena Williams and Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal are the latest celebrities to promote the benefits of plant-based food, via a new campaign for JUST Egg.

Food-tech company Eat Just, creator of the vegan egg product, debuted two new television commercials as part of the campaign, starring Williams and Gyllenhaal respectively.

The adverts, narrated by actor JB Smoove, poke fun at the lengths celebrities go to in order to maintain their health and fitness. But with JUST Egg, the commercials suggest, eating healthily (and sustainably) is easy.

Like all plant-based foods, JUST Egg is completely free from cholesterol. It also contains 69 percent less saturated fat than chicken eggs, and boasts five to seven grams of protein per serving (depending on the product).

The eggs, made from mung beans, are also kinder to the planet. As of April, Eat Just had sold the equivalent of 250 million eggs, saving 9.1 billion gallons of water in the process.

It also spared 43.6 million kilograms of CO2e and 13,446 acres of land.

Celebrity endorsement

Speaking about the campaign, Williams said: “I eat to live, so JUST Egg helps me feel and perform better. But it’s also delicious – I don’t think my family can even taste the difference between JUST Egg and chicken eggs.

“I’m also all-in on the mission: how can we make healthy, sustainable options accessible to everyone?”

The athlete, who has 23 grand slam victories to her name, is also a shareholder in the company, something Williams says she’s “proud” of.

“JUST Egg is making a real difference,” she added.

Gyllenhaal – who has worked on near to 60 movies, including Donnie Darko and Nightcrawler – is also an investor in the brand.

“I’m excited to be partnering with JUST Egg,” he commented. “I’m eating more plant-based for my health, and JUST Egg makes it easy and delicious.

“I also recognize the impact our food system has on our planet, so JUST Egg’s mission is important to me. And, honestly, who can turn down being narrated by JB Smoove?”

The new ads will air on television in major markets, including Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City. They will also appear nationwide on connected TV platforms and social media, while billboards of the collaborations will pop up in hard-to-miss locations.

Nestlé Launches Vegan Egg And Shrimp In Health And Sustainability Drive https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/nestle-vegan-egg-shrimp/ https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/nestle-vegan-egg-shrimp/#comments Wed, 06 Oct 2021 15:25:45 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=256659 The new products are said to mimic the taste and texture of their animal-based counterparts

The post Nestlé Launches Vegan Egg And Shrimp In Health And Sustainability Drive appeared first on Plant Based News.

The largest food company in the world, Nestlé, has expanded its plant-based offerings. The company has debuted vegan egg and shrimp under its Garden Gourmet brand.

The new launches are part of Nestlé’s mission to provide products ‘that are good for them and good for the planet’, a press release says.

Vegan egg and shrimp

R&D experts at Nestlé Research in Switzerland and the R&D Center for culinary food in Germany created the vegan options.

The plant-based egg, Garden Gourmet vEGGie, is made with soy protein. It contains omega-3 fatty acids and achieves a Nutri-Score A in Europe. Like conventional eggs, the product can be scrambled, used in pancakes, or as an ingredient in baking.

Nestlé’s new vegan shrimp, Garden Gourmet Vrimp, is made from a blend of seaweed, peas, and konjac root.

The ‘Vrimp’ is a source of fiber, has a Nutri-Score B in Europe, and mimics the taste and texture of real ‘succulent’ shrimps, the company says. It joins the brand’s existing vegan tuna product, which is available in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

Stefan Palzer, Nestlé Chief Technology Officer, commented: “Our new plant-based shrimp and egg alternatives have an authentic texture and flavor, as well as a favorable nutritional profile which makes them a good replacement for animal-based shrimp and eggs in a wide range of dishes.

“Our longstanding expertise in plant, protein and nutritional sciences enabled our teams to develop these great innovations in under a year. As we speak our R&D teams are already preparing the next wave of plant- based launches.”

Nestlé’s meat-free options have proven popular so far. At an event held in London today, CEO Mark Schneider said the company’s vegan burgers and sausages are seeing double-digit sales growth. He added that it’s ‘not limited to one particular age group or one particular demographic group’.

“This is really getting mainstream and broad based,” he said. Schneider later added that Nestlé’s overarching goal is to provide a plant-based protein to ‘replace every animal protein out there’.

Nestlé will trial the new egg and shrimp across a limited number of European markets, including Switzerland. The company has not yet announced exactly where they will be available.

Nestlé controversy

Nestlé has attracted criticism over the years, with many claiming it uses unethical supply chains and practices. The company has been accused of using child labor, unethical water mining, and causing severe deforestation.

At today’s event, Plant Based News Director Robbie Lockie asked Schneider about the company’s plan for winning back consumer trust.

“As a principle, the only way to get trust is to earn it,” Schneider said. “And there’s no shortcuts there. And I think you have to know that over time, with good and honest and convincing products. And then also corporate behavior that people feel good about and that’s something we’re deeply committed to.”

He continued: “That’s why, for example, it was so important, especially here for a vegan community that we are crystal clear on the ingredients, and that, you know, the ingredient list is short and it’s very basic natural ingredients.”

He noted that there’s no artificial flavoring in the new vegan shrimp. “And still, you know, you’ll find out later how close it is to the real thing,” Schneider said. He added that ‘engineering’ a product with ‘fancy chemistry’ would be counterproductive to gaining consumer trust.

Vegan food brand Eat Just has joined forces with Infinite Foods, a plant-based food market platform in Africa. Together, the companies will launch JUST Egg Folded – toaster-ready folded vegan eggs – in the South African market.

It’s the first plant-based egg to launch in Africa.

The eggs are made from non-GMO ingredients, namely mung beans. They offer 7g of protein and are free from soy, nuts, and gluten.

Addressing health and sustainability

The collaboration will further Infinite Foods’ goal to address social, health, and environmental issues in Africa.

Michelle Adelman, Founder and CEO of Infinite Foods, commented: “Eat Just is an innovative company on the forefront of food technology, making them an amazing partner to help Infinite Foods address the food security, health, and sustainability issues we face in Africa.”

Like all plant-based foods, JUST Egg Folded is free from cholesterol.

High cholesterol can lead to a myriad of health conditions, including chronic heart disease. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), chronic heart disease is responsible for 37 percent of all non-communicable disease deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Additionally, the product’s ingredients require 98 percent less water and 86 percent less land than conventional eggs. They also produce 93 percent fewer carbon emissions than their animal-derived counterparts.

“We are excited about the opportunities this partnership creates as it speaks to Infinite Foods’ ethos to create socio-economic sustainability, advance a plant-forward lifestyle, and leverage technology to bring great products to market.”

Shoppers will be able to find JUST Egg Folded at all Wellness Warehouse retailers in South Africa. The plant-based eggs will also join restaurant menus in greater Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban including Lexi’s, Jackson’s, and Great Cape Deli.

Infinite Foods’ eCommerce site also stocks JUST Egg Folded.

Your eyes do not fool you! This magnificent dish features a walnut based vegan pate and a chickpea based plant-based egg!
Vegan Pate with Plant-Based Egg Yolk
Duration5 mins
Prep Time5 mins
Servings4 people

Ingredients

 • 1 cup walnuts
 • 25 g parsley
 • 25 g mint
 • 1 can black beans drained and rinsed
 • 2 cloves garlic
 • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
 • 1 tbsp soy sauce
 • 1/2 lemon juice only
 • 2 tbsp tomato puree
 • 1/2 tsp sea salt fine
 • 1/4 tsp black pepper ground
 • 2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

 • Pulse the walnuts in your food processor until you have an even crumble like this, not a fine powder. Add the crumble to a mixing bowl and set aside.
 • Rinse and dry the mint and parsley. Pick off the thickest stalks and chop the leaves finely. Add to the mixing bowl.
 • Add the remaining ingredients and, using your hands or a potato masher, combine everything. As with the walnuts, we want to retain some texture in the beans. We don’t want a completely smooth paste.
 • Transfer the mix to a storage container and keep in the fridge overnight or at least several hours. The walnut crumble in the mix should soften as it absorbs some of the juices.
 • Serve in any number of ways! Enjoy as a starter (like in the picture above). Or roll into balls as part of a mezze. Spread it in your sandwiches and wraps. Stuff veggies with it. Put it on pizza. You do you!

]]>
Crackd, the UK’s ‘first’ liquid egg replacement, is set to launch a nationwide ad campaign to showcase the versatility of vegan eggs.

Since launching just six months ago, the brand will soon be available in more major supermarkets across the country.

Moreover, it is planning global expansion.

Crackd campaign

The vegan egg brand will screen its new campaign on national television from mid-June.

It will involve three adverts, one of which will feature Great British Menu finalist Ruth Hanson.

She is the Head-Chef of London-based gastropub, The Princess Of Shoreditch. As part of the campaign, she will display a variety of vegan recipes using the Crackd product in order to help educate consumers on how best to cook with it.

The brand claims it is already supporting kitchens around the country by ‘enabling creativity’ in cooking – and is planning wider expansion to meet growing demand.

Growth

Crackd is already available in Marks & Spencer, The VeganKind Supermarket, and WholeFoods.

Additionally, it will debut in Morrisons at the end of this month.

The company – owned by Bingham & Jones, who are behind the renowned GOSH! range – is planning wider distribution. This summer, it plans to expand internationally.

However, it is not yet confirmed which countries will see Crackd on shelves first.

Vegan egg expansion

General Manager Rik Roberts told PBN he wants to see more supermarkets accepting vegan eggs as a growing trend.

He said: “It’s been widely reported that all the majors have been increasing their ranges on plant-based products over the past few years.

“Sainsbury’s has +3800 lines now tagged vegan, Asda has +1500 items, Waitrose +700 items, and we all know Tesco’s have done an amazing job step-changing their offering in plant-based products recently.

“But even though they list hundreds of alt milks, vegan cheeses etc there are no plant-based eggs.

“Eggs are used in so many foods, but if you want to adopt a more plant-based diet there are no products in any of their ranges that will do what Crackd can do.

“We’re here for those that can’t, don’t, or won’t eat eggs and believe that consumers deserve to have a choice in this category.”

Crackd’s products

Each bottle contains the equivalent of eight eggs. They can be used in various recipes from cakes to Yorkshire puddings and scrambled eggs.

The pea protein base provides a good source of B12. Moreover, Crackd assures it is free from artificial colors and flavorings.

Food-tech brand Eat Just aims to launch its vegan egg alternative across Europe by the end of 2021.

The company’s CEO Josh Tetrick announced the expansion plans at this year’s virtual New Food Conference.

Eat Just Europe launch

When asked about plans to launch JUST Egg in Europe, he said: “We’re in the process of working with regulators and we are optimistic that we will be launching until the end of the year.

“Our goal [is] to be the most consumed egg in the world. It is more healthy, you don’t need the chicken.

“In order to eat an animal, you need to slaughter, you need to use antibiotics, you need to tear down the rainforest. Or maybe this used to be the case, it’s not anymore.”

No further details have been revealed.

Vegan egg

Earlier this year, Eat Just announced it had sold the equivalent of 100 million chicken eggs.

The company celebrated the landmark achievement on Twitter, where it described itself as ‘the fastest-growing egg brand in the US’.

It added: “This is a major milestone for us in our mission to build a better food system. We’re incredibly grateful that you’ve been a part of getting us here.”

The announcement shortly follows a recent finance round, where Eat Just secured a staggering $200 million.

The money will be used to build capacity for Eat Just’s pioneering products. It will also help accelerate research and build its brands in ‘key international markets’.

Food-tech brand Eat Just is launching sous vide vegan egg bites in the US.

The debut is in partnership with Cuisine Solutions – the ‘world’s leading manufacturer and distributor of sous vide foods’.

Vegan egg bites

The new vegan egg bites are available in four different flavors, all of which are inspired by regional cuisines:

 • America: roasted potato, dill, chives, red bell pepper, and black pepper.
 • India: curry, broccoli, cauliflower, coconut milk, and lemongrass.
 • Japan: portobello mushrooms, yams, togarashi, soy, and tamari.
 • Mexico: roasted poblanos, chipotle chile powder, black beans, corn, and lime.

Moreover, the bites will be sold in select US grocery stores, in the freezer section, from March.

Josh Tetrick is the co-founder and CEO of Eat Just. In a statement sent to PBN, he said: “The Cuisine Solutions team is the best in the world at what they do.

“We partnered with them because of their unparalleled expertise and leadership in the sous vide industry and their commitment to make our food system even better.”

Tetrick also said he was ‘excited for consumers to taste what we’ve been working on’.

‘Revolutionize the food industry’

Felipe Hasselmann is the President and CEO of Cuisine Solutions. He added: “Josh’s vision for the future of plant-based food is extremely inspirational.

“Both organizations seek to impact and revolutionize the food industry on a daily basis, which is what makes this such a natural partnership….

“We are extremely excited to start supplying customers with the best sous vide egg bites in the market made with the best plant-based egg.”

Eat Just

Earlier this year, Eat Just became the world’s first brand to receive approval for its cultured meat.

The brand’s cell-based chicken was then served to an inaugural table of consumers in Singapore.

Speaking about the slaughter-free chicken, an 11-year-old guest said: “I’m speechless… It will save a lot of animals’ lives and it will be a lot more sustainable.”

Gregorys is launching a new vegan egg breakfast burrito.

The NYC-based coffee chain has partnered with Eat Just to welcome the new plant-based offering.

The new burrito is loaded with Daiya cheese and crumble Beyond sausage, as well as sauteed onions, red bell peppers, potatoes, and Folded JUST Egg.

It retails at $5.95 but will be available for $2 on January 21 to celebrate its introduction to the menu.

Gregorys says almost half (49 percent) of its hot food sales are delivered from two menu items featuring JUST Egg.

‘Delicious and one of a kind!’

“2021 is all about turning the page. 2020 was a lot,” said Founder Greg Zamfotis.

“I thought there was no better way to start this next chapter than with a better-for-you breakfast offering that will knock your socks off.”

Moreover, Zamfotis says the chain’s Vegan Scramble and Vegan Deluxe sandwiches have been its two most popular sandwiches.

“I’m not surprised,” he added. “They are absolutely delicious and one of a kind!”

Last year, JUST partnered with a global egg giant to bring animal-free products to more US consumers.

It teamed up with Michael Foods, ‘one of the largest processors of value-added eggs in the world’.

Josh Tetric is the co-founder and CEO of JUST. He said: “For over 100 years, the Michael Foods family of businesses have leveraged quality ingredients and cutting-edge processes to offer the finest products and solutions to their customers.

“This partnership adds an innovative new product to their impressive portfolio.

“Our companies share a great deal in common. We’re fathers and brothers and sisters and mothers, all sharing a belief that the food we eat is one of the most important choices we make. Signing this partnership is one of the proudest moments in our company’s journey to build a better food system.”

Startup brand, Crackd, has launched its long-awaited cold-pressed egg substitute in Marks and Spencer stores across the U.K.

Each bottle contains the equivalent of eight eggs and can be used in cakes and Yorkshire puddings as well as in quiches and scrambled eggs.

Crackd announced the launch earlier this month and is now stocked in hundreds of M&S outlets nationwide.

Crackd is now available in M&S stores around the U.K.

Rich in B12

Ingredients include pea protein, nutritional yeast, and vitamin B12 and the product is free from artificial colors and flavorings.

Development firm Bingham & Jones is behind the brand’s creation, following the success of ranges Heck and GOSH! – according to Green Queen.

‘Rise and bind’

Rik Roberts, Crackd General Manager, told Green Queen: “It’s designed to perform like an egg – aerating and emulsifying.

“Combined together they both help the item you’re cooking to rise and bind, leading to a lightening in texture.”

Cooking takes 15 minutes longer with its vegan egg, Crackd claim – with an optimal temperature of 10 degrees Celcius lower than a chicken egg rather than 10 degrees.

Availability

The plant-based egg is also available from The Vegan Kind online at £4.09 a bottle.

Vegan eggs are popping up around the globe, from Eat Just in China to Zero Egg in the U.S.
