Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and longtime vegan, Billie Eilish, has once again teamed up with American sportswear brand Nike to launch an entirely plant-based sneaker and apparel collection.

Nike x Eilish

Eilish first joined Nike’s artist roster last year. She kicked off the collaboration with a range of leather-free vegan Air Jordans, featuring her signature slime green color.

In their latest collaboration, Eilish puts her own unique spin on the iconic Nike Air Force 1s.

The new sneakers – featuring a neutral mushroom color palette – are made from a synthetic nubuck leather material, derived from 80 percent recycled materials, including 100 percent recycled polyester.

Similar to past releases, the sneakers channel Eilish’s own oversized aesthetic, featuring chunky mid-foot straps. The collection showcases a total of four chunky straps covering the sneaker’s laces, a look that is inspired by two other Nike staples, the Alpha Force Low and Air Trainer 3.

The sneaker also features a fifth strap that goes around the ankle in the high-top version of the vegan-friendly AF1s.

Eilish’s stick-figure Blohsh logo is displayed on the lace deubrés and the Nike Air logos appear as usual over the tongue and heel. The insoles are made with cork and embossed with lyrics from her song Billie Bossa Nova: “It’s hard to stop it once it starts.”

“The challenge and opportunity with this collection was to respect the originals, but make them my own. It was also important for me to mix in environmentally preferred materials where we could and present them in a way that felt fresh,” Eilish shared in a press release.

New apparel collection

The Nike x Billie collaboration also features a new range of matching mushroom-colored apparel in her signature oversized style.

The clothing range includes a fleece hoodie, t-shirt, and sweatpants, embellished with subtle silicone Billie Ellish graphics and the iconic Nike logo turned on its side, pointing straight upwards.

Cruelty is never in style

Beyond Eilish’s music career, she’s an avid activist working to promote sustainability and veganism. She uses her platform to influence the fashion industry as a whole to recognize that cruelty is never in style.

PETA has also recognized Eilish’s work, naming her its “Person Of The Year” in 2021. President of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk, previously shared: “PETA is happier than ever to celebrate her for seizing every opportunity to point out that vegan fashion and foods are kinder to the animals and the planet we share with them.”

The new Nike x Billie collection is now available on Nike’s website.

Nike Accused Of Driving Kangaroos To Extinction To Make Leather Football Shoes https://plantbasednews.org/culture/ethics/nike-kangaroos-leather-football-shoes/ https://plantbasednews.org/culture/ethics/nike-kangaroos-leather-football-shoes/#comments Mon, 20 Dec 2021 15:28:02 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=259985 Animal rights advocates have urged Nike to use vegan leather alternatives instead of kangaroo skin

The post Nike Accused Of Driving Kangaroos To Extinction To Make Leather Football Shoes appeared first on Plant Based News.

]]>
Nike has come under fire for using kangaroo skin to make its leather football shoes. Animal rights advocates in Australia say the world’s largest footwear company is helping to drive the species to extinction.

Protesters gathered at Nike’s stores in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane over the weekend to urge the company to switch to vegan alternatives.

Nike is the largest buyer of kangaroo leather, according to a press release from the Animal Justice Party NSW (New South Wales, the state Sydney is located in).

More than 40,000 kangaroos are killed every month for this reason in NSW alone, the party says. The figure does not include kangaroos killed by farmers, from recreational hunting, as roadkill, or joeys, whose deaths are not counted.

Notably, even surviving joeys suffer, according to conservation biologist Associate Professor Daniel Ramp. Ramp says joeys who saw their mob being hunted stopped “exhibiting play behavior” after the fact. Animal Justice Party members named the information “heartbreaking.”

Protests

The group was joined by more than 15 international and national organizations on the weekend for the Nike-focused animal protection campaign.

“Anyone who buys or sells kangaroo leather can’t escape this simple fact: the commercial kangaroo killing industry is industrialized, legalized animal abuse,” Animal Justice Party’s lead senate candidate, Darren Brollo, said at the protest.

“It is no different to the bludgeoning of baby harp seals overseas that Australians are often quick to detest. The massacre of our native animals is a terrible price to pay for a pair of shoes,” he added.

In a separate statement, MP Mark Pearson named the industry profit-driven, cruel, and environmentally destructive.

“Nike must take ownership of its contribution to the bludgeoning of thousands of joeys to death every night, and the regional extinction of kangaroos already happening across Australia,” Pearson said.

It’s been long-accepted that Australia is home to an abundance of kangaroos, which only inhabit a handful of countries. But a recent Parliamentary Inquiry confirmed that the commercial industry is “driving kangaroos to extinction,” Animal Justice Party’s press release says.

One Liberal MP, who sat in on the inquiry, had a “crisis of conscience,” it adds, and took their concerns to the media.

Person continued in his statement: “There are countless plant-based alternatives to animal skin leather, and Nike has the chance to lead the way in developing the world’s best vegan football boots that are better for the planet and all animals.”

Louis Vuitton has stepped into the sustainable vegan footwear scene, with the launch of its new Charlie sneakers made with corn.

The luxury fashion brand crafted the sneakers with sustainability in mind.

The company used 90 percent recycled and bio-sourced materials in the design. For instance, a corn-based plastic called Biopolioli is used in the uppers of the shoes.

The laces are fashioned with 100 percent recycled fibers, while the soles are made of at least 94 percent recycled rubber.

Further, the tongue patch features Econyl, a renewable nylon fabric. Even the sneakers’ box is completely recycled cardboard, and becomes a bag with a handle.

The Charlie is the luxury fashion brand’s first “eco-designed sneaker,” as well as its first unisex model

Vegan leather alternatives

Louis Vuitton isn’t the first to explore plant-based footwear. Channel, renowned for its luxury leather goods, has used Piñatex in its designs. Piñatex is derived from pineapple plant fibers from the fruit’s leaves and stalks. The animal-free alternative also helps funnel extra income to pineapple farmers.

Hugo Boss tried out Piñatex too, using the material to make a range of vegan leather shoes.

And, a recent partnership between Bolt Threads and Kering Group – parent company to brands like Gucci, Alexander McQueen, and Saint Laurent – saw mushroom-based leather being used for a myriad of products.

The Charlie sneakers are priced at $1,080 for the low-tops, and $1,130 for the high-tops. Head to the Louis Vuitton website for more information.

]]>
Manchester United footballer Paul Pogba has designed his very own vegan football boot. And it’s the first-ever vegan Predator Freak, in partnership with Adidas and Stella McCartney.

Paul Pogba vegan football boots

The athlete designed the shoe over lockdown when he was missing playing football. Then, he had a chat with sustainable fashion designer Stella McCartney and the idea was born.

‘Hearing how passionate [Pogba] was about fashion and learning how much we had in common really sparked the inspiration for co-creating this iconic boot’, McCartney said in a statement sent to PBN.

She added: “One comment that stuck with me was how fashion was part of his personality both on and off the pitch, so it was important for this to shine through in the design.”

As well as being vegan, the Predator Freak features recycled materials. And, it’s gender-neutral too.

‘Bold and unique’

Speaking on the launch, Pogba revealed it’s an ‘incredible feeling’ to combine his passion for football and style.

‘The boots we created with Adidas are bold and unique, and I can’t wait to wear them when I step onto the pitch’, he added. Additionally, it’s been ‘particularly special’ as Pogba is a big fan of Stella McCartney.

Customers can purchase the Predator Freak for €280 online, and in selected Adidas stores from November 1.

Billie Eilish has joined forces with Nike – the largest footwear company in the world – to release two vegan Air Jordan designs.

Vegan Nike sneakers

The musician, who is vegan herself, designed the sneakers with sustainability in mind. As well as being leather-free, the shoes contain more than 20 percent recycled material.

The Eilish collab resulted in a pair of tan-colored Air Jordan 15 sneakers.

Eilish told Nike, per Page Six, that the Air Jordan 15 has been her favorite style ‘since [she] knew what Jordans were’.

“When I got them … I looked at them as if they were $1 million sitting right in front of me,” she said.

“This is not a popular shoe and I don’t give a f*ck,” she added. “Because what you feel about something you love deeply is all that matters in the world.”

The seven-time Grammy Award-winner also designed new Air Jordan 1 KOs, available in the star’s signature slime green color.

“This color is such a classic, stupid, little ‘old me’ thing, I guess. I really wanted to kind of have almost like an ode to myself … this was me, for a while,” Eilish explained.

She told Nike that the style’s shape goes ‘with everything’.

“… With pants, with shorts, with dresses, with skirts … I love the way they make your legs look,” she said.

Both pairs come complete with Eilish’s Bloshsh logo, which she designed at just 14 or 15 (reports on her exact age vary).

Billie Eilish and vegan fashion

The collaboration isn’t Eilish’s first foray into vegan fashion. Just last week, the entertainer persuaded designer Oscar de la Renta to stop using fur in its designs.

In return, she agreed to wear one of the label’s gowns – which came with a 15-foot train – to the Met Gala.

“I’m honored to have been a catalyst and to have been heard on this matter,” she said about the move.

Eilish’s new Air Jordans launch on September 27 on store.billieeilish.com and September 30 on the Nike SNKRS app.

Reclypse sneakers

The shoes feature lining created from ECONYL regenerated nylon, which is sourced from pre- and post-consumer waste like fishing nets and carpet.

The Reclypse sneakers – which are handmade in Italy – come in four colors. They have a recycled polyester upper, as well as a tractor sole containing plant-based and renewable materials.

They also feature contrast panels of vegan leather and mesh.

“The Stella McCartney Reclypse is fashion innovation, taking luxury trainers one step closer to sustainability and circularity – it stylishly blends athleticism with escapism,” reads a release sent to Plant Based News.

Is Stella McCartney vegan?

It’s certainly not Stella McCartney’s first foray into animal-free fashion. The brand does not use animal-based leather, feathers, fur, or exotic skins. However, it does use wool in some of its designs.

Stella McCartney was founded by a designer of the same name, who is also the daughter of Sir Paul McCartney.

Both he and his daughter are long-time vegetarians. The designer’s late mother, Linda, was also a vegetarian and the founder of plant-based meat brand Linda McCartney.

Stella McCartney’s new vegan Reclypse sneakers are part of the brand’s WI21 collection, which launches on August 25.

Sustainable sneaker brand Cariuma has launched a range of ‘ocean-friendly’ vegan sneakers made from recycled plastic and sugarcane.

And, with every purchase, the brand is vowing to remove two pounds of trash from oceans, rivers, and coastlines.

‘Ocean-friendly’ vegan sneakers

The limited-edition shoes are made with 100 percent recycled plastics, a sugarcane EVA outsole, and a cork and mamona oil insole.

Cariuma says each pair is designed to leave customers ‘lighter on your feet’, as well as leaving behind a ‘smaller footprint’.

Additionally, the shoes are made to order to minimize waste.

The range is completed with two designs, including IBI Slip-Ons and IBI Low-Top Sneakers. Each is available in either blue or white and retails at $98 a pair.

4ocean collaboration

Moreover, the vegan sneakers are made in collaboration with 4ocean – an organization fighting widespread plastic pollution.

It conducts beach cleans across the globe and creates jewellery made from recycled bracelets.

So far, it claims to have collected over 15 million pounds of garbage from the ocean.

Commenting on the collab, Cariuma said: “With defiant optimism, our friends at 4ocean have laid the groundwork for an active approach to ending ocean plastic pollution.

“At Cariuma, we’re no strangers to the shared effort required to restore and protect our world for future generations.”

“Between us, the goal was to design a product to start conversations, to raise awareness around ocean plastic pollution, and create a product that’s better for you and the planet.”

American footwear giant UGG has unveiled a sustainability program following Earth Day this year to help fight global warming.

It’s rolling out a tree regeneration program, as well as a ‘first-ever’ repair initiative.

Sustainability

The brand is committed to regenerating 200,000 acres of land this year. Moreover, it plans to extend this to one million by 2025.

In a statement sent to PBN, the company said its journey towards a more ‘sustainable future’ will involve actively restoring the earth and its ecosystem.

Moreover, UGG is launching a ‘first-ever’ repair program.

As part of it it will restore damaged shoes to ‘like-new’ condition. It comes after the brand estimates more than 300 million pairs of shoes are thrown away each year.

UGG has also committed to sourcing all the wood used in its products from 100 percent recycled fiber from within FSC-certified forests.

UGG

The drive is in partnership with the environmental organizations Savory Institute and Canopy.

Chris Kerston, of Savory Institue said: “The brand’s commendable work on traceability and now their leadership with supporting farmers on their individual journeys towards achieving regenerative environmental outcomes is incredible.

“This level of commitment is a win for farmers, consumers and for nature.”

Plant-based shoe range

Earlier this year UGG launched a plant-based shoe range. The ‘carbon-neutral’ Plant Power collection is made from renewable sugarcane.

It features a Fluff Sugar Platform and Fluff Sugar Sandal made from renewably harvested trees.

The brand said it’s committed to making its products ‘better for both consumers and the planet’.

Roger Federer has launched a unisex tennis shoe made from vegan leather.

The tennis ace – who is often considered the greatest player of all time – collaborated with running brand On to create The Roger, which is said to combine Federer’s minimalistic style with On’s technical performance.

The shoe features rubber soles and vegan leather which On said was used to reduce the shoe’s environmental footprint. Hidden in the sole is a Speedboard which On says makes ‘every step feel lighter’.

‘Proud’

“The minimalist design and easy comfort of On’s shoes had me hooked years ago. I wanted to infuse the tennis sneaker with the same lightness, comfort, and agility for every day,” said Federer.

“I love working with the On team, using my knowledge of performance footwear and personal interest in fashion to contribute to product development. I’m proud to be a part of the creation of The Roger, which is the most comfortable tennis-inspired sneaker you will ever wear.”

‘Incredible natural beauty’

On co-founder David Allemann, added: “We love to explore and aspire to protect the incredible natural beauty that surrounds us, hence this new generation of tennis-inspired sneakers has been created with sustainability in mind.

“The Roger is crafted from vegan leather and has been designed for lightness to reduce material consumption. The result is a significantly smaller environmental footprint for this tennis-inspired sneaker. The vegan leather has approximately 30 percent of the footprint of animal leather.”

The Roger Centre Court 0-Series are available via an online raffle here closing today or Dover Street Market locations worldwide.

‘Eliminate animal products’

According to the designer: “Since the ’70s, Adidas Superstar shoes have played a major role in the shaping of our culture. These shoes are vegan and entirely eliminate the use of animal products.
