Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and longtime vegan, Billie Eilish, has once again teamed up with American sportswear brand Nike to launch an entirely plant-based sneaker and apparel collection.

Nike x Eilish

Eilish first joined Nike’s artist roster last year. She kicked off the collaboration with a range of leather-free vegan Air Jordans, featuring her signature slime green color.

In their latest collaboration, Eilish puts her own unique spin on the iconic Nike Air Force 1s.

The new sneakers – featuring a neutral mushroom color palette – are made from a synthetic nubuck leather material, derived from 80 percent recycled materials, including 100 percent recycled polyester.

Similar to past releases, the sneakers channel Eilish’s own oversized aesthetic, featuring chunky mid-foot straps. The collection showcases a total of four chunky straps covering the sneaker’s laces, a look that is inspired by two other Nike staples, the Alpha Force Low and Air Trainer 3.

The sneaker also features a fifth strap that goes around the ankle in the high-top version of the vegan-friendly AF1s.

Eilish’s stick-figure Blohsh logo is displayed on the lace deubrés and the Nike Air logos appear as usual over the tongue and heel. The insoles are made with cork and embossed with lyrics from her song Billie Bossa Nova: “It’s hard to stop it once it starts.”

“The challenge and opportunity with this collection was to respect the originals, but make them my own. It was also important for me to mix in environmentally preferred materials where we could and present them in a way that felt fresh,” Eilish shared in a press release.

New apparel collection

The Nike x Billie collaboration also features a new range of matching mushroom-colored apparel in her signature oversized style.

The clothing range includes a fleece hoodie, t-shirt, and sweatpants, embellished with subtle silicone Billie Ellish graphics and the iconic Nike logo turned on its side, pointing straight upwards.

Cruelty is never in style

Beyond Eilish’s music career, she’s an avid activist working to promote sustainability and veganism. She uses her platform to influence the fashion industry as a whole to recognize that cruelty is never in style.

PETA has also recognized Eilish’s work, naming her its “Person Of The Year” in 2021. President of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk, previously shared: “PETA is happier than ever to celebrate her for seizing every opportunity to point out that vegan fashion and foods are kinder to the animals and the planet we share with them.”

The new Nike x Billie collection is now available on Nike’s website.

Billie Eilish is hosting a climate-focused event called “Overheated” in London this summer.

Named after a song from Eilish’s 2021 album Happier Than Ever, the six-day event is bringing together activists (including Ugandan climate justice activist Vanessa Nakate), musicians (Sigrid features on the bill), and speakers, like Destiny Boka Betesa. A co-founder of ChokedUp, Betesa works to raise awareness of air pollution and the racial injustice surrounding it.

Alongside Eilish, Overheated’s founders include Support + Feed and REVERB. The former was launched by the singer’s mother Maggie Baird amid the pandemic and aims to promote plant-based diets. The latter is a nonprofit dedicated to reducing the music industry’s impact on the planet.

The event’s slogan reads: “Overheated. Can’t be defeated. United for our planet.”

Billie Eilish pushes for climate action

Eilish, a vegan, is passionate about climate awareness. Her current Happier Than Ever tour has its own Eco-Village, where fans can learn more about climate action. It also features a pre-performance message from Baird. She urges viewers to take Support + Feed’s plant-based pledge and ditch meat for 30 days.

Diet change is a key way to fight the climate crisis. The meat industry is a leading cause of deforestation, water pollution, and contributes 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

In the recorded message, Baird says: “I know that you know that Billie and her whole family are very concerned about climate change and I know you are too. By taking a pledge to eat at least one plant-based meal a day for 30 days you will help save the planet.”

Eilish is also backing a new collaboration in the music industry called Music Declares Emergency U.S. Other artists in support of the group—which is the new US chapter of an existing European initiative and pushes for more governmental action—include Arcade Fire, Annie Lennox, Tom Odell, and Bon Iver.

A joint statement from the group reads: “The climate crisis is the greatest challenge of our time, and the power of music should take its place at the forefront of this important movement to create a safer, fairer, more sustainable world. The climate crisis is about science, not politics.”

Overheated is at the O2 Arena in London on June 10-12, 16, 25, and 26. Tickets are on sale now.

Why Billie Eilish’s Sustainable Red Carpet Fashion Is So Important https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/fashion/billie-eilish-sustainable-red-carpet-fashion-important/ https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/fashion/billie-eilish-sustainable-red-carpet-fashion-important/#respond Fri, 15 Apr 2022 12:51:07 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=265995 Each glitzy celebrity event involves a red carpet, big names, and of course, lots and lots of outfits. But what impact does this have on the planet?

The post Why Billie Eilish’s Sustainable Red Carpet Fashion Is So Important appeared first on Plant Based News.

]]>
In May 2021, Billie Eilish stepped onto the Met Gala’s red carpet oozing the glamour of old Hollywood in a Grace Kelly-inspired ball gown.

She was poised and pretty in peach, but she was also full of purpose. Because for the musician, the Oscar de la Renta look came with a price: the brand must pull fur from the shelves for good. And so it did.

“I am beyond thrilled that the entire team heard me on this issue,” Eilish said at the time. “They have now made a change that makes an impact for the greater good, not only for animals but also for our planet and environment too.”

But she didn’t stop at the Met. Alongside her mother Maggie Baird, the founder of food insecurity-focused plant-based nonprofit Support and Feed, Eilish continued to make bold and ethical fashion statements during the 2022 awards season.

For her appearance at the Oscars—where she won Best Original Song alongside her brother Finneas for No Time to Die—Eilish donned a black, ruffled Gucci gown made with deadstock (which consists of previously rejected or unused fabric).

And at the Grammys, where the singer was nominated in seven categories, Baird accompanied her daughter in a vibrant red Mohammad Benchellal dress featuring upcycled materials.

Here’s why their red carpet outfit choices matter for the animals and the planet.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CTyEHQ5Laig/

The problem with red carpet fashion

The film and music awards season usually runs for several months, starting around November and finishing in the spring of the following year. Each glitzy event involves a red carpet, big names, and of course, lots and lots of outfits.

According to Vogue, for just one celebrity at one event, around 60 outfit options can be pulled (which gives you an idea of the scale of garments required across the whole season). But all of that clothing has an impact on the planet. For starters, there’s all the waste it creates.

Fashion has a huge problem with clothing waste. It’s estimated that every second, a garbage truck full of textile waste is dumped at the landfill or incinerated. But when brands choose upcycled materials or deadstock for garments, like those worn by Eilish and Baird, they can go some way towards mitigating this impact.

Problems with leather

Samata Pattinson is the CEO of Red Carpet Green Dress Global (RCGD Global), an organization that champions sustainable red carpet design initiatives. It supported Baird and Eilish to make their outfit choices.

Pattinson said that, while “red carpets create an opportunity for a powerful moment and conversation,” the environmental destruction they leave in their wake is a serious problem. “There is clearly an opportunity for a more streamlined, efficient, and sustainable approach to design,” she told Plant Based News.

Leather, for example, is a favorite of many designers and celebrities. But the material is detrimental to the environment. Just last year, a report by Stand.earth and Slow Factory linked a number of fashion brands, including luxury names like Fendi, Prada, and Louis Vuitton, with deforestation in the Amazon caused by leather manufacturers and tanneries.

Leather production is also cruel. Every year, more than one billion animals are slaughtered for their skins. And it’s not just cows. Kangaroos, sheep, goats, horses, alligators, crocodiles, and horses are just a few examples of animals that the leather industry exploits.

And just because the item is luxury, doesn’t mean it’s been humanely produced. Last year, Hermès submitted plans to expand its saltwater crocodile farms in Australia. If they go ahead, 50,000 crocodiles will suffer in cramped conditions before they are slaughtered for their skins.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb8v7oVApng/

Why ethical red carpet choices matter

But change is happening in fashion. Like Oscar de la Renta, a number of luxury brands now have fur bans. These include Versace, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Burberry, Armani, and Dolce & Gabbana.

Plus, vegan materials are becoming more commonplace. Valentino, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci have all launched vegan leather sneakers in recent months. In April of last year, Karl Lagerfield debuted vegan bags made with cactus leather and organic cotton. In October, Danish label Ganni pledged to drop leather completely and replace it with a more sustainable and cruelty-free plant-based alternative.

Celebrities can help to drive up demand for more sustainable and ethical clothing choices. During red carpet events, in particular, they have a big influence. Not only do millions tune in to watch awards ceremonies live, but in the aftermath, the images of who wore what continue to circulate on social media. They garner hundreds of thousands of likes and views.

“Red carpet culture has evolved because there is a bigger focus on a story, a desire to offer depth and connect beyond the red carpet,” said Pattinson.

She added: “Red carpet moments are exciting and glamorous. But they are also a highly visible way to inspire education and change. Red carpets provide an opportunity to show your values.”

‘It’s really important to me that what I wear reflects all that I believe’

So when Baird and Eilish chose ethical gowns for the Grammys and the Oscars, they used their platforms for good. “It’s really important to me that what I wear reflects all that I believe,” Baird told Plant Based News. “I strive to wear clothing that is sustainable to the planet. That is also cruelty-free in terms of animals and also human labour.”

The mother-daughter duo isn’t alone in making more ethical red carpet choices. RCGD Global has been working to support more ethical and cruelty-free outfits at awards ceremonies since 2009.

Actor and activist Suzy Amis Cameron founded RCGD Global during the press tour for the first Avatar (her husband James Cameron’s record-breaking blockbuster). The organization spotlights the environmental and ethical problems in the fashion world and helps stars to make kinder choices.

Last year, RCGD Global supported Marlee Matlin, who wore a vegan custom-made Vivienne Westwood gown. Like Eilish’s 2022 dress, the garment features Tencel (a sustainable cellulose-based fiber). This year, Paloma Garcia Lee and Tati Gabrielle both made sustainable designer choices in collaboration with RCDG Global.

“The incredible platform our Oscars campaign gives us helps us champion brands that are going the extra mile to do good. It allows us to reach a global audience in one night – quite literally with one dress or tuxedo.

“Through the red carpet our campaign reaches millions in nearly 100 countries,” says Pattinson. “We have been promoting this change for over a decade now, but never in history has sustainability been more relevant.”

Billie Eilish concert-goers are being treated to a pre-performance message from the singer’s mom urging them to eat more plant-based foods.

Last Saturday, fans gathered to watch Eilish perform a medley of her biggest hits in Los Angeles during her Happier Than Ever tour.

But, as seen in a clip shared on social media, they also got to witness a promotional video from Maggie Baird, Eilish’s mom. In the clip, Baird talks about her food insecurity-focused, plant-based organization Support + Feed.

Founded in 2020, Support + Feed is on a mission to tackle food injustice and the climate crisis simultaneously.

In the beginning, the organization was founded to provide first responders and vulnerable people with nourishing plant-based meals amid the pandemic. And at the same time, support Los Angeles’ restaurant scene, which was suffering due to stay-at-home measures.

People could place orders through their favorite vegan restaurants and donate the meals to people in need.

Now, Support + Feed has evolved into a fully-fledged non-profit that is working to promote climate-friendly plant-based diets. The organization’s current campaign encourages people to eat one plant-based meal a day for 30 days. They can sign up to take the pledge via text.

Billie Eilish’s climate-friendly tour

At Eilish’s concert, Baird states: “I know that you know that Billie and her whole family are very concerned about climate change and I know you are too.”

“By taking a pledge to eat at least one plant-based meal a day for 30 days you will help save the planet.”

The promotional video is the result of a partnership between Eilish, Support + Feed, and vegan food brand Wicked Kitchen. The latter has teamed up with Baird’s organization and is donating 100,000 plant-based meals to the cause.

Ditching meat can have a big impact on the planet. After all, animal agriculture contributes to a multitude of environmental issues, including deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and water waste.

Aside from promoting the plant-based pledge, Eilish has taken other measures to ensure her tour is as green as possible.

The musician partnered with REVERB, a music industry-focused environmental nonprofit. The organization ensures that the tour’s environmental impact is low and offsets emissions.

At each of Eilish’s shows, there is also an Eco-Village where fans can learn more about climate action and get custom reusable water bottles in exchange for donations.

Vegan pop icon Billie Eilish has kicked off her latest world tour. Featuring music from the songwriter’s 2021 album, Happier Than Ever, the concerts also boast an eco-friendly twist.

During the international tour, Eilish will champion various environmental organizations, and encourage fans to take a pledge to eat more plant-based foods.

Part of this involves bringing BIPOC and women-led sustainable initiatives to center stage.

The seven-time Grammy award winner is performing across the US, Canada, UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand aka Aotearoa this year.

Billie Eilish’s eco-friendly world tour

Along the way, Eilish is spreading an eco-friendly message through the inception of Billie Eilish Action Village. It will host and support minority environmental organizations, including Support + Feed.

The plant-based charity is run by Eilish’s mother, Maggie Baird, and provides meals to people experiencing food insecurity.

With Support + Feed, the musician announced the launch of The Pledge, which encourages attendees to eat one plant-based meal a day for 30 days.

It also includes a partnership with environmental non-profit, REVERB – that claims to have removed 287,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere so far.

The Happier Than Ever tour is part of REVERB’s Music Climate Revolution program. This works to not only reduce the tour’s overall environmental footprint but also supports initiatives eliminating greenhouse gases.

It is these combined efforts that make the tour “climate positive,” meaning it goes beyond achieving net-zero carbon emissions and actively removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Billie Eilish is an outspoken vegan advocate

Sustainability-focussed music

Eilish’s Happier Than Ever tour launched yesterday, on February 3.

And along with the aforementioned eco-friendly partnerships, Support + Feed has enlisted vegan brand Wicked Kitchen to help aid their vital efforts by supplying 100,000 plant-based meals to help people in need. The organizations will supply 100,000 plant-based meals to help people in need.

In a statement, co-founder Chad Sarno said: “There is no better time than now to do what we can to alleviate the suffering in this world.

“…That starts with any positive impact we can support within local communities.

“This sense of urgency that Wicked shares with Support + Feed is the driving force of our partnership. And, will be amplified with the power of plant-based food distribution.”

‘Climate positive’ action

It’s not the first time Eilish has championed climate-friendly choices on tour.

For example, REVERB also partnered the singer on her Where Do We Go tour. This included the offering of free filtered water refill stations.

Eilish spoke on Jimmy Fallon back in 2019 about making the tour “as green as possible.”

Here, she said: “There are no plastic straws allowed, the fans are going to bring their own water bottles.

“There’s going to be recycle cans everywhere. Because it’s like, if something’s recyclable, it doesn’t matter unless there’s a recycle bin.”

Seven-time Grammy winner, Billie Eilish is following in the footsteps of other iconic animal advocates by scooping a monumental PETA award.

The 19-year-old becomes the younger person to be awarded the animal charity’s Person Of The Year 2021.

Billie Eilish

Notable advocacy efforts include urging luxury fashion designer Oscar de la Renta to ditch fur. This was in exchange for wearing one of the label’s gowns at the Met Gala, where vegan meals were served for the first time this year.

The star also launched her first vegan perfume just months ago, made entirely without animal products or testing. And, unveiled two leather-free Air Max trainers with Nike.

It was a combination of these that led PETA to crown the musician their top for this year. It’s also because she “never stays silent about animal protection,” the organization revealed.

Commenting on the news, PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk said: “Billie Eilish is making sure that the party’s over. For meaty, milky meals as well as for leather, fur, and silk.

“PETA is happier than ever to celebrate her for seizing every opportunity to point out that vegan fashion and foods are kinder to the animals and the planet we share with them.”

You can now get vegan chocolate merch inspired by musician Billie Eilish. Called the Happier Than Ever Chocolate Bar – after Eilish’s album of the same name – the dairy-free treat will start shipping out next month.

The new vegan candy was announced by Support + Feed, a non-profit organization centered around tackling the climate crisis and promoting plant-based food.

Actor Maggie Baird is the founder and president of the organization, as well as Eilish’s mother.

“It is exciting to have such a delicious vegan ‘milk’ chocolate available at all. And the fact that Billie has been able to partner with a chocolate maker she has loved since she discovered them, to bring it to her fans is really kind of thrilling!” Baird told Plant Based News.

The non-dairy chocolate is Rainforest Alliance certified. It’s made with 100 percent organic-certified ingredients, including raw cane sugar, cocoa butter, bourbon vanilla extract, tiger nut powder, and chocolate liquor.

It comes wrapped in a compostable nature-flex foil, which, according to Eilish’s website, is made from “sustainable raw materials.”

Billie Eilish and veganism

The animal-free recipe is apt, given Baird and Eilish are longtime vegans.

Eilish took up a plant-based diet around seven years ago. She wrote on her blog at the time that “a lot of reasons” motivated the change, including animal welfare concerns. “Leave animals alone,” she wrote.

Since then, Eilish has frequently used her platform to raise awareness about the impact of using animals for food and fashion.

Most recently, the 19-year-old convinced fashion design Oscar de la Renta to stop using fur. In return, Eilish promised to wear one of its gowns to the Met Gala.

Those interested can pre-order the Happier Than Ever Chocolate Bar here.

A host of celebrities including Billie Eilish, Joaquin Phoenix, Sadie Sink, and Natasha Lyonne are calling on US president Joe Biden to allow “pardoned” turkeys to reside at Farm Sanctuary.

Every year, the president takes part in a ceremonial pardoning for Thanksgiving. Here, a bird is rescued from slaughter in a tradition started by George H.W Bush.

And this year, celebrities hope the rescued turkey can be rehomed at the renowned animal sanctuary, Farm Sanctuary.

It’s also hoped that people can rethink killing and eating turkeys over the holidays and beyond.

Among the other celebrities urging President Biden to honor the pardon are Rooney Mara, Dave Bautista, Mena Suvari, Margaret Cho, Alan Cumming, and Mayim Bialik.

They form a petition with Farm Sanctuary, a shelter for farmed animals.

It reads: “Animals receive quality care from experienced caregiving teams at our sanctuaries in California and New York, And, they are allowed to live out their lives in peace and safety.

Celebrities saving turkeys

“Modern turkeys have been genetically altered to grow exceptionally fast and large. And, they require specialized attention, which birds pardoned by previous presidents haven’t received.

“As we approach the holiday season – meant to be a time of gratitude and goodwill – we hope you’ll accept our offer to provide sanctuary and the best life possible for pardoned turkeys.

“Here, they will have the opportunity to dust bathe, feel grass beneath their feet, enjoy a robust social life, and receive personalized care.

“We would be happy to open our doors to anyone in your administration. Or, the poultry farmers themselves to see what a beautiful life these spared turkeys will experience at Farm Sanctuary.”

A new vegan documentary is poised to expose the racial inequality that is rife within the food system. Called They’re Trying to Kill Us, the film features notable figures from hip-hop, medicine, politics, and sport, supporting the notion that ‘poisonous diets’ are ‘the single biggest threat to Americans of color’.

Headed by co-directors John Lewis and Keegan Kuhn, the film highlights the link between diet, institutional racism, disease, poverty, food deserts, and government corruption.

The documentary investigates why African Americans are twice as likely to die from diabetes than white Americans, and why black and Indigenous People of Color are dying from COVID-19 three times more than white Americans.

‘We must all take action’

The film has attracted supporters across multiple fields.

Eleven-time NBA All-Star and vegan Chris Paul is an executive producer of the documentary. Paul adopted a plant-based diet in 2019, and consequently, saw a ‘career resurgence’, a press release says. The athlete then helped lead the Suns to their first NBA final appearance in nearly 30 years.

Vegan musician Billie Eilish is also an executive producer. The Grammy Award-winner also went vegan in 2019, citing animal products’ impact on health and animal welfare as her motivation.

“I want people to see this film,” Eilish said in a statement sent to Plant Based News. “It is so important to help all of us understand the depth of the issue, and that we must all take action to change the food system.”

Ne-Yo, Mya, Dame Dash, Tabitha Brown, John Salley, Derrick Morgan, Maggie Q, Cendric the Entertainer, and doctors Milton Mills and Neal Barnard feature in the movie. New York City Mayoral candidate Eric Adams will also be interviewed, among others.

Where to watch

They’re Trying To Kill Us will be released at 11am EST on November 11. Those interested can watch the film exclusively on its website. It costs $20 to download the documentary.

The film’s launch will be a ‘Cooperative Release’, giving documentary participants, supporters, and select influencers access to the film’s purchase page. There, they can divide the profits 50/50 for the first week of release. Further, the filmmakers are handing the first $1,000,000 raised directly to charity.

Grammy Award-winning musician Billie Eilish is set to launch her first perfume. The fragrance is made without animal products or animal testing, a nod to the 19-year-old’s own vegan lifestyle.

The perfume, called Eilish, ‘opens with sugared petals’, a press release says, with hints of mandarin and red berries.

Rich cocoa, creamy vanilla, and warm spices follow suit. While at its base, the scent boasts warm musks, tonka bean, and sleek wood tones.

Speaking to ELLE, Eilish describes the fragrance as ‘very cozy’ and ‘sensual’.

“It makes me want to be curled up at Christmas,” she adds.

Why aren’t all perfumes vegan?

Not all perfumes are vegan, and many test on animals.

Non-vegan ingredients sometimes used to make fragrances include kasturi, which is sourced from a gland between a deer’s back and rectum.

Castoreum – which comes from the castor sacs of beavers, is also used – as is musk, which comes from male musk deer.

Nostalgia

Billie Eilish The fragrance reminds Eilish of her childhood.

The vegan singer-songwriter was closely involved in the creation of the product, reportedly holding full creative control.

The bottle, for instance, is a representation of Eilish’s favorite parts of the human body: the chest, neck, and collarbone. It comes coated in a shimmery amber-bronze.

For Eilish, the scent is nostalgic.

“It reminds me of when I was 14. I had this shirt, and it was like a mesh black turtleneck. I don’t know why it reminds me of that shirt, but it does,” she explained.

“I think about the closet I had that shirt in. I had it in a big wooden closet in my room, and it kind of smells like that. So that is what comes to mind.”

The songstress continued, saying that nostalgia is ‘one of the best gifts that we have in life’. She added that she’s ‘obsessed’ with her childhood memories.

Like a ‘warm embrace’

Eilish set out to craft a perfume that felt like a ‘warm embrace’, she said, per the press release.

“Like what it feels like to feel your blood rushing through you. It’s a scent that I’ve been chasing for years and years and years. It’s my favorite smell in the world.”

Eilish by Billie Eilish will launch in November on BillieEilishFragrances.com, priced at $68. Those interested can sign up for early access via the website.
