The 2021 UN Climate Change Conference, aka COP26, is being urged to offer exclusively plant-based foods.

An online petition urging the event to hire vegan caterers has garnered hundreds of signatures.

UN Climate Change Conference (COP26)

It states: “Disappointingly, previous UN Climate Change conferences have offered very little plant-based foods.

“COP26 presents an opportunity for the UK government to set a global example in Glasgow, one of most vegan-friendly cities in the world.

“Halving consumption of meat, dairy products, and eggs in the European Union would achieve a 40 percent reduction in ammonia emissions and a 25–40 percent reduction in non-CO2 GHG emissions…”

This year, the COP26 is being held in the UK…

The COP26 summit will bring parties together to ‘accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement’. As well as goals set out by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

These include limiting global warming to ideally 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.

‘Ambitious’ climate change targets

Ahead of the event, UK Prime Minister vowed to slash its greenhouse gas emissions by more than two-thirds in the next decade to fight climate change.

Boris Johnson said the ‘ambitious’ target will set the country ‘on course to hit net zero by 2050’.

Moreover, he wrote on Twitter: “2021 is going to be a very important year in the fight against climate change. The UK’s hosting the C0P26 conference in Glasgow, and I can think of no better way to kick things off than by setting an ambitious and demanding but yet achievable goal.

“The whole world needs to act on climate change… I’m immensely proud that the UK is once again leading the way.”
