A recent investigation has revealed the shocking conditions animals are exposed to at an Aldi chicken supplier.

An undercover investigator for Mercy for Animals, a non-profit animal protection charity, captured the footage at a contract farm for the supermarket chain.

This comes soon after the charity exposed the names of major retailers that are lagging behind in their efforts to address welfare issues associated with chickens raised for meat.

Aldi is among the companies that ranked the lowest for standard practices in the chicken industry.

Animal cruelty on chicken farms

The hidden-camera footage shows tens of thousands of chickens packed into overcrowded sheds, forced to live in waste-soaked litter for weeks. The investigator also documented countless birds, including day-old chicks, suffering from severe open wounds, twisted necks and beaks, and other serious injuries.

Many of these conditions arise from the way chickens are routinely bred to grow unnaturally large over a short space of time. This inflicts a huge amount of physical and mental stress on the birds.

In the hard-hitting video, workers are seen hurling sick and injured live birds into buckets to die. Some were crushed under the weight of corpses piled on top of them.

In light of the footage, Mercy for Animals is calling on Aldi to adopt meaningful animal welfare standards for all its chicken suppliers. The charity is urging Aldi to undertake the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC), which requires extra space, litter, and lighting, as well as environmental enrichments.

As a way for individuals to take action, Mercy for Animals encourages eliminating animal products altogether. It states on its Aldi Uncovered website: “We can end this cruel, unsustainable system. By choosing plant-based foods, we can build a food system that is good for animals, people, and our planet.”

Vegan food sales skyrocketed at Aldi UK last month, boosting by 500 percent compared to the January prior. The discount supermarket chain credited the rising popularity of Veganuary for this growing interest in plant-based food.

Aldi UK also revealed that its plant-based sales leapt up by 250 percent in 2021 compared to 2020.

The budget-friendly chain expects the impressive sales figures to stick around for the remainder of the year, owing to Aldi’s recent expansion of its vegan and vegetarian range.

The supermarket extended its plant-based lineup by 50 percent, spurred on by growing demand.

“Veganuary is getting bigger and bigger each year as the UK’s appetite and interest in plant-based food grows,” Julie Ashfield, Aldi managing director of buying, said in a statement.

“In response to that demand we’re continuing to expand our vegan offering, giving our shoppers plenty of choice and all at great value.”

In celebration of Veganuary 2022 – which proved to be the largest yet – Aldi came out with its “largest vegan range yet.”

With prices starting at 55p, Aldi now offers various vegan meats, like bacon, as well as snacks, sides, ready meal dinners, and desserts. In December, the chain introduced its first-ever dairy-free cheese.

And consumer interest didn’t end as January came to a close. “It’s also a trend that we’re witnessing year-round and, as more and more people adopt this diet,” Aldi’s Ashfield continued. “We expect these products to remain popular throughout the year.”

The UK’s largest supermarket chain, Tesco, has reported similar surges in interest.

The company said that sales of its plant-based Wicked Kitchen products “rocketed” – with demand doubling in January compared to last year.

Vegan cheese is having a moment in the UK right now, as two major brands step into the sector for the first time. Dairy giant Babybel, known for its mini cheese wheels, has debuted its first-ever vegan cheese. Meanwhile, budget-friendly supermarket chain Aldi unveils its first nondairy cheese line in the UK – just in time for Veganuary.

Babybel vegan mini cheese wheels

French snack cheese brand Babybel first launched in 1952, and introduced its popular mini cheese wheels in 1977.

The company had yet to venture into the plant-based scene, but will take the leap on January 1, 2022, by launching vegan cheese wheels in Sainsbury’s (£2 for a pack of five).

The product is made from coconut oil, and is free from artificial colors and preservatives. It’s a source of calcium and vitamin B12, and is approved by the Vegan Society.

Further, each wheel is wrapped in Babybel’s iconic wax coating, swapping out its usual red coloring for green.

Brand manager Ollie Richmond said that consumer push had motivated the launch.

“We’ve seen overwhelming demand for the development of a vegan-friendly Babybel over the years, and with the plant-based market continuing to grow substantially, the new launch is perfectly timed to meet this consumer appetite,” they said to The Grocer. Notably, in September, a Mintel report revealed that around one in three Brits are drinking dairy-free milk.

Babybel noted it hopes the timely Veganuary launch will “unlock incremental sales.” The 31-day initiative sees people around the globe pledging to go vegan throughout January.

The campaign’s popularity has skyrocketed in recent years. Last Veganuary, a record-breaking 582,000 people signed up.

Aldi’s vegan cheese

Also keen to tap into the hype surrounding the campaign, Aldi is welcoming its first own-label vegan cheese.

The dairy-free Mature Cheddar Block (£1.39 for 200g) and Grated Cheddar Pack (£1.39 for 150g) will both be available come January 2, 2022. They’re made from coconut oil, and are also free from gluten and soy.

The products will be available from Aldi’s Plant Menu range, which currently offers meat-free meatballs, onion and rosemary sausages, vegan beef pasties, and plant-based burgers, among others.

Aldi is hailed among budget-friendly shoppers for its comparatively low prices. A glance at the chain’s competitors finds that its new vegan cheese is no exception.

Tesco’s coconut oil-based cheddar retails at £2.00 per 200g, making Aldi’s version 36 percent cheaper.

And Sainsbury’s free-from cheddar, also made from coconut oil, goes for £2.25 per 200g. As does Marks & Spencers’ version, leaving Aldi’s 47 percent cheaper than both supermarket chains.

Walmart, Target, ALDI: Report Exposes ‘Worst’ US Grocery Chains For Chicken Welfare https://plantbasednews.org/culture/ethics/grocery-chains-chicken-welfare/ https://plantbasednews.org/culture/ethics/grocery-chains-chicken-welfare/#comments Thu, 16 Dec 2021 15:59:36 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=259835 Mercy For Animals has urged major companies to do more to protect chickens' welfare

The post Walmart, Target, ALDI: Report Exposes ‘Worst’ US Grocery Chains For Chicken Welfare appeared first on Plant Based News.

]]>
A new report has exposed the major US retailers that are lagging behind in terms of chicken welfare. Walmart, Target, and ALDI are among those that have failed to publish “meaningful” animal welfare policies for chickens raised for meat (called broilers).

Mercy For Animals, a non-profit striving to end animal exploitation in the food system, published the report yesterday.

The charity collated information from leading retailers to better understand the conditions faced by the billions of birds being raised for food across the US. This includes the amount of light and enrichments provided for birds, how much space each animal receives, and the processes used for slaughter, among other factors.

Some companies, like Sprouts Farmers Market and Whole Foods Market, have adopted the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC). The welfare policy stipulates that for every 1,000 birds, at least two meters of usable perch space must be provided.

Further, cages or multi-tier systems cannot be used, and suppliers must comply with all EU animal welfare laws and regulations, regardless of which country they produce in.

But not all retailers have stepped up. Many of the country’s leading supermarkets have fallen flat by not publishing broiler welfare policies that “meaningfully address the most critical welfare concerns,” the report says.

“Of companies with published policies at all, standards fall short of those of the BCC. They have failed to ban practices that promote the greatest suffering in their broiler chicken supply chains,” it adds.

The following retailers were identified as lagging:

 • ALDI
 • BJ’s Wholesale Club
 • Golub Corporation (brands include Price Chopper and Market 32)
 • H-E-B
 • Hy-Vee
 • Publix
 • Raley’s
 • Southeastern Grocers (brands include Winn-Dixie, Fresco y Más, and Harveys)
 • Stater Bros. Markets
 • Target
 • Trader Joe’s
 • Wakefern (brands include ShopRite, Price Rite, and The Fresh Grocer)
 • Walmart (brands include Walmart and Sam’s Club)
 • Wegmans
 • Weis Markets

‘Shocking’ standard practices

Adobe Stock More than nine billion chickens are killed for food in the US every year.

Every year, more than nine billion chickens are killed for their meat in the country – more than any other land animal used for food, according to Mercy For Animals.

“Standard practices in the chicken industry would shock most consumers,” the report reads.

The “overwhelming majority” of broilers in the US have been “aggressively bred for rapid growth,” it adds. This often leads to organ stress, heart disease, and immobility.

“Birds live crowded together in sheds on waste-soaked litter, which leads to ammonia burns and respiratory problems. They are killed at five to seven weeks of age, typically through live-shackle slaughter, a method whereby chickens are shackled upside down while fully conscious and dragged through electrified water,” the report explains.

Leah Garcés, president of Mercy For Animals, called on companies to do more to improve animal welfare.

“Kroger and Albertsons, the country’s two largest supermarket companies, have begun making meaningful progress on key chicken welfare issues. But others—such as Target, ALDI, and Winn-Dixie—have failed to take action to prohibit the worst practices and reduce suffering for the chickens in their supply chains,” Garcés said in a statement.

“Retailers know people care about animals,” they added. “By adopting the standards of the Better Chicken Commitment, grocery stores and supermarkets can address growing consumer concern for how animals are raised and slaughtered.”

‘Humane slaughter’

However, some animal advocates argue that there is no humane way to slaughter animals. As such, concerns about animal welfare have moved a growing number of people to adopt a plant-based diet

Earlier this year, the Veganuary campaign attracted more participants than ever before. Nearly 600,000 people from 2019 countries signed up to the 31-day vegan eating challenge. Animal welfare was identified as the top reason for those taking the pledge, with 46 percent of participants citing it as such.

With Halloween on the horizon, the plant-based world has, as ever, got us all covered with ethical indulgence. This year is no different, with vegan marshmallows arriving in Sainsbury’s and a drop-dead pizza launch featuring Wicked Foods and One Planet Pizza.

Wicked Kitchen joins forces with vegan pizza company

For Halloween this year, Wicked Kitchen and One Planet Pizza have teamed up to launch a ‘spooktacular’ vegan pizza. Derek Sarno’s vegan brand, which recently launched in the US, partnered with the pizza company to debut the Pulled Mushroom offering.

The product was made to help provide a solution to the environmental impact of industrial fishing, as well as providing a healthier option to fish.

Moreover, they come in three flavors: Classic, Sweet Corn + Pepper, and Sweet Chilli, Green Queen reports.

Eat Just brings Folded vegan egg products to US Costco outlets

JUST Egg, a renowned vegan egg brand, is taking its JUST Egg Folded to all 57 Costco locations in California, US.

A club pack, complete with 18 Folded plant eggs is available for $14.99. And the company describes it as a ‘fluffy folded egg, perfect on top of toast’. Its main ingredient is mung beans, meaning the product is packed with protein.

And, it’s easier to prepare than eggs because they can be cooked straight in the toaster.

Further rollouts are ‘to come’, Eat JUST confirmed.

Vegan marshmallows arrive at Sainsbury’s

Award-winning vegan confectionery brand, Free From Fellows, is launching three flavors of Vegan Mallows at Sainsbury’s stores across the UK.

Additionally, they are free from the top 14 allergens. Each 105g bag, whether it’s Strawberry, Vanilla, or Mini Pink & White Vanilla, is on sale for £1.50.

Bravura Foods, the owner of Free From Fellows, sent a statement to PBN. Co-founder Karl Morris said the launch marks a ‘natural progression’ for the brand and ‘timed perfectly for Halloween…to make sure nobody is left out at those key occasions’.

MOJU expands product range in major supermarkets

Health shots brand, MOJU, has secured new listings in Co-Op, Asda, and Leon stores across the UK following new investment.

The award-winning brand’s range is available in over 600 stores from next month, with Ginger Shots arriving in both Asda and Co-Op, and the Turmeric Shot and Prebiotic Shots coming to over 170 Asda stores.

It follows the company’s announcement that it raised over £2.5 million, with plans to further expand over 2022.

Another US retail giant welcomes plant-based brand Lightlife

Walmart now stocks plant-based meat brand, Lightlife, which is part of Greenleaf Foods.

Stores nationwide are offering the Plant-Based Burgers, Breakfast Links, and Breakfast Patties. What’s more, the company claims the launch is a first for Walmart in adorning meatless meat in its breakfast section.

And, the new items join Lightlife’s top-selling Smart Dogs and Tempeh currently available in the grocery chain.

unMEAT drops in US, with plans to reach UK next year

Century Pacific Food INC, a fish and dairy producer based in Asia, has debuted a plant-based range of meat alternatives in the US this week.

It includes a Burger Patty, Hungarian Sausage, as well as vegan Nuggets, Canned Tuna, and Canned Luncheon Meat.

Senior executive Nikki Dizon told PBN: “One of the biggest concerns about plant-based foods is that they are not delicious or as pleasing to the palate as real meat.

“But our Nutrition Science team took that as a challenge, and completely delivered by coming up with a meat alternative that unbelievably and undeniably looks, feels, and tastes like meat.”

Moreover, the brand has plans to come across the pond by 2022.

New York to step up its coffee game thanks to La Colombe

Coffee shop La Colombe and plant-based beverage brand Pressed are expanding the coffee market with their ‘profee’.

It’s said to provide the magical taste of our favorite caffeine but in smoothie form: and bursting with vitamins. ‘Profee’ is from a TikTok trend, where users add protein powders to level up their coffee.

The brand has created two new smoothies in Vanilla Protein Cold Brew and Mocha Reishi Cold Brew – and both are sweetened with monk fruit.

They’re available at La Colombe outlets in New York City, US, from October 28. And, from November 2, they’ll arrive in further outlets across the country.

Aldi’s plant-based BBQ range

Julie Ashfield is the Managing Director of Corporate Buying at Aldi UK. She said: “With the huge popularity of our Veganuary offering and the extension of our range over the past six months, launching more vegan products just made sense… It’s an area we expect will continue to grow.

“We’ve just launched our Ashfield Grill BBQ range in time for more outdoor dining. We want to make sure those following a vegan diet, as well as those choosing a more flexible approach to meat consumption, have a wide range of high-quality options at great prices too.”

How to BBQ for vegans

The launch shortly follows research conducted by Aldi that found a staggering 47 percent of Brits don’t know how to cater for vegans at BBQs.

The supermarket partnered with celebrity chef Judy Joo to provide tips on how to cook plant-based food for guests.

She recommends cleaning the grill with a half-cut onion to avoid cross-contamination, basting vegan meats to retain moisture and add flavor, and encourages cooks to ‘be adventurous’.

Supermarket giant Aldi is rivaling viral brand Little Moons with the launch of new vegan mochi balls.

Earlier this year, Little Moons took the internet by storm with its Japanese-inspired desserts, selling out in supermarkets across the UK.

Little Moons

At the time of writing, the hashtag ‘Little Moons’ currently has a staggering 290.3 million views on TikTok.

Mochi is a bite-sized treat consisting of ice cream wrapped in a gelatinous dough made from rice flour.

Now, budget retailer Aldi is launching its own version of the popular dessert. They’re priced competitively at just £2.99 for a box of six.

Aldi’s Wao Mochi Balls range debuts on May 17 and consists of three flavors: Coconut, Tropical, and Mango. Only the Mango and Tropical balls are suitable for vegans.

“With over 15,000 mochi-themed videos now available on TikTok… It’s no wonder it’s been tipped as the ice cream trend of the summer,” Aldi said.

“The moon-shaped dessert is mochi in demand by shoppers, with some mochi brands reporting sales skyrocketing by 2,000 percent since January.

“Not only have Tik Tok fans been ice-screaming for more mochi balls, but former First Lady Michelle Obama has chosen them as a trusty co-host in her newly launched cooking show for kids, Waffles and Mochi.”

Just Love Food Company’s Danika Woods said: “We are so excited by the launch. And, as a company built on inclusivity and allergy management, it’s great to be able to offer a much-loved vegan version of this classic.”

Archie is certified by The Vegan Society and is also nut-free.

Marketing Manager at The Vegan Society, Ericka Durgahee welcomed the launch.

She added: “This announcement couldn’t have come at a better time – the world has been missing a vegan chocolate caterpillar cake and we can’t wait to get our hands on one… We’re thrilled to welcome Archie on board.”

Caterpillar cake feud

Supermarket giants Marks & Spencer and Aldi warred over the cakes in a court case that garnered mass public interest.

M&S began legal action last month over claims Aldi’s cheaper rival, Cuthbert, was too similar to its iconic Colin cake.

The feud attracted social media attention

Aldi’s Cuthbert retails at £5 whereas Colin is sold in M&S for £7. As a result, M&S argued this was to ‘ride on the coat-tails’ of the company’s high quality reputation.

The story erupted on social media and #FreeCuthbert soon started trending on Twitter.

Aldi since announced it was bringing back a limited edition Cuthbert in order to donate profits to cancer charities.

In a Tweet, the company hinted it wanted to direct funds away from lawyers, signaling a nod to the legal proceedings.
