Vegan singer-songwriter Lizzo has used her massive platform to promote plant-based food once again. The Truth Hurts artist took to TikTok in recent weeks to share two vegan recipes with her more than 21 million followers.

The three-time Grammy Award winner has been vegetarian for more than a decade. Then in June 2020, Lizzo went vegan.

The musician, known for her iconic flute solos during her performances, recently headed to TikTok to rave about her vegan cheesy Takis creation

It features Japanese yams, “high protein” tofu, onion, garlic, nutritional yeast, dairy-free parmesan, vegan smoked gouda, hot sauce, and salt and pepper. Once blended, Lizzo pours the cheesy sauce over a bowl of Takis Fuego chips, which are plant-based.

“EAT YOUR FEELINGS WITH ME,” Lizzo captioned the post.

Two days later, Lizzo again sang the praises of vegan food on TikTok, which has around one billion active monthly users

This time, the recording artist whipped up vegan chicken Alfredo. Lizzo said it was the first time she had made the creamy dish, which tasted like “heaven.”

https://www.tiktok.com/@lizzo/video/7069457267258625322?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1&lang=en

It’s certainly not the first time Lizzo has celebrated plant-based food with her fans; she’s been publicly doing so since she first went vegan nearly two years back. She’s also used conversations about veganism to tackle fat shaming.

In response to fat-phobic comments on TikTok, Lizzo filmed herself in her underwear eating a vegan egg sandwich. “[Shout out] to all my fat vegans – we look as good as we feel… And to the haters, good luck chasing that narrow beauty standard,” she wrote.

Power of celebrity influence

Sharing pro-vegan content online can help normalize the lifestyle and introduce people to new ideas surrounding food and consumption. Combine that with the significant reach of celebrities and other high-profile individuals, and that impact intensifies.

In 2015, a Harvard review looked at the influence of celebrities on people’s attitudes and behaviors.

The author, academic researcher Julie Doyle, said celebrity dialogue around veganism “offers the potential for a previously stigmatized practice … to achieve mainstream credibility.”

This could, in turn, have an effect on the planet, she notes.

“Celebrities can act as important intermediaries to help make the complexities of climate change more accessible and relevant to our daily lives. Food is one such area where celebrities can help link the impacts of climate change to our consumption habits,” Doyle wrote. “Indeed, as one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, the production and consumption of meat and dairy … is a crucial social practice that requires further interrogation.”

Along a similar vein, a 2009 survey found that one in four teenagers admit to being more influenced by celebrities than people they know.

Hailey Bieber took to Instagram this week to tell her 36 million followers that she’s ‘never felt better’ after ‘completely cutting’ meat consumption. The model has experimented with a plant-based diet in the past.

“Over the past two and half months I completely cut meat (other than fish) out of my daily eating and have been sticking to more vegetarian/vegan dishes,” she wrote on an Instagram story.

“I have never felt better. [I] feel so clear and energetic. Just sharing for anyone who may be thinking about cutting out meat,” she added.

For Bieber, it’s a return to the diet. Earlier this year, the 24-year-old announced she had ditched efforts to eat plant-based.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, she said: “I felt great and I had a lot of energy, but it was not for me.

“I don’t eat a strictly plant-based diet and I do still eat meat. I just don’t eat a lot of it. I’ve picked up more fish, greens, and lentils.”

Hailey Bieber changing diet

Bieber – who married entertainer Justin Bieber in 2018 – has been raving about vegan food for years.

In 2019, the socialite wrote on Instagram: “I’m half Brazilian so trust me I love a good pichana. But I will say over the last week or so I have tried some of the most unbelievable vegan food I’ve ever had, and I want to keep exploring plant-based! Send me all your suggestions!”

Bieber also complimented the dairy-free milkshakes served by Monty’s Good Burger, a retro-style vegan diner. She said she couldn’t ‘believe’ they didn’t contain dairy.

Last year, Bieber publicly asked for recommendations for books and documentaries about plant-based eating.

“Trying to transition over to eating mostly plant-based, about to watch The Game Changers,” she wrote online. “If you have any suggestions of other things to watch or read send them my way!”

Ariel Beninca, a vegan model and designer from Brisbane is eyeing the prestigious Miss Australia World 2021 title.

Since making the switch to veganism a decade ago, Beninca is a passionate environmental campaigner.

Miss World Australia 2021

The pageant is part of the wider Miss World competition, and if successful, Beninca will represent her country on an international scale.

In a statement sent to PBN, she said she couldn’t believe she’d made it to the final.

She added: “To win Miss World Australia 2021 would mean everything to me. To represent my country on the world stage would be the opportunity of a lifetime.

“It’s also a great opportunity to educate my platform on global issues.”

The designer uses her social media platform to show off her favorite plant-based spots in Brisbane, including her top vegan pizza.

In a bid to helping her audience eat less meat and dairy, she recently said on an Instagram story: “Vegan chicken: you can still have chicken without harming chickens.”

She also offers tips to making easy vegan meals, such as pulled jackfruit on nachos and textured vegetable protein with gravy.

Vegan pageant stars

As part of the competition, Beninca is raising money for Bush to Beach, an education platform designed to support children who live in ‘The Bush’, a widely undeveloped area in the country.

So far, Miss World has raised over $1 billion dollars for children’s charities.

Previous Miss World winners include Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra, who recently declared she was ‘getting into’ veganism.

Moreover, a vegan model and software engineer scooped the US-run Miss Universe title earlier this year. Andrea Meza was victorious and took the crown for Mexico.

Just like Miss World, the competition was put on hold due to the pandemic.

Former One Direction star Liam Payne revealed he ‘feels better’ for ditching meat, in an Instagram Live video screened to his more than 22 million followers.

The musician made the move to vegetarianism after watching some ‘rather scary’ programs on Netflix.

Liam Payne

In the live video, Payne answered questions from his fans. Whilst he admitted he’s abandoned meat, he said he still eats dairy.

The star said: “Recently I have gone – I don’t want to say vegan because I still like milk and cheese too much – but I’ve gone vegetarian at the moment which is a new one for me.”

Moreover, the singer is already seeing the health benefits. ‘I do feel better for it, I’ll be honest with you’, he added.

One Direction

The revelation makes Payne the second former One Direction band member to ditch meat.

It comes after Harry Styles made his own announcement in an interview last year, stating: ‘I don’t eat meat’.

The move was praised by Veganuary.

Seaspiracy

Liam Payne made a nod to become more sustainably-minded earlier this year.

Since watching the hit Netflix film, Seaspiracy, he said he felt ‘deeply disturbed’.

Moreover, in a video on YouTube, he said he’ll be ‘moving in a more sustainable way’.

Seaspiracy delves into the effect the fishing industry has on marine life, and has resulted in a plethora of celebrities and figures worldwide ditching fish. Among them are Kourtney Kardashian and Tessa Brooks.

Payne added: “I have to admit I hadn’t given it as much thought as I should have.”

They will also be paid for their time and have access to the accommodations’ many facilities. This includes an indoor infinity pool, sauna, gym, as well as a steam room.

‘The opportunity of a lifetime’

“They’ll have 21 days to enjoy plant-based foodie fun, create meaningful and memorable content, and challenge some of the misconceptions around plant-based food.

“We can’t wait to see what the house comes up with!”

‘A plant-based spin’

“By giving the Squeaky House a plant-based spin… We’ll be able to capture some of the excitement around vegan food and offer each of our housemates an experience they’ll never forget.

“It’s the most exciting creator house concept anywhere in the world.”

A vegan café has received a ‘torrent’ of online abuse, including violent threats, for serving an exclusively vegan menu.

Caffi Clwedog, located in Wales, says its menu is carefully selected to be as ‘sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible’.

Violent threats

It serves a range of plant-based dishes including Bean Burgers, Burritos, and Clywedog Flapjacks, as well as a selection of plant milks for hot drinks.

However, the eatery has been subject to mass backlash after farmer Gareth Wyn Jones posted a picture of its menu online.

He wrote on Facebook: “Is this Caffi just using plant-based fluids and not using natural local milk?”

At the time of writing, the post has garnered nearly 2,000 comments. These includes abusive remarks including an alleged threat of arson.

‘Let’s be kind’

Caffi Clywedog has responded to the furor with a public statement declaring ‘let’s be kind’.

It reads: “We would firstly like to thank the public who have supported us and sent kind messages, after we received a torrent of negativity which included online threats for offering a plant-based menu.

“In a time where small hospitality has had a hard enough time as it is, we were saddened to receive a surge of unexpected, online abuse.

“Although we respect that people can all have different views… We cannot accept are threats of violence and arson to our premises, and messages of hatred that have been sent to Caffi Clywedog, which has promoting well-being within our community at the heart of everything we do.

“We’re committed to our work at Clywedog to promote positive well-being, and will continue to serve members of the public, as well as helping the vulnerable in our community.

“We’re proud to support social prescribing creativity classes which are a lifeline for those around us. This includes ex-servicemen and women who suffer from severe PTSD, the elderly who are suffering from loneliness, and those with mental health issues.

“We will continue to be part of the Clywedog community, promoting tourism and leisure in Wales.

“It’s our choice to provide, fresh plant-based refreshments to those who want them, without forcing our personal ethics onto people, we trust our potential customers are intelligent, and capable of making their own decisions.”

‘It’s a vegan café’

Moreover, Jones’ post has also received a slew of positive comments from both vegan and non-vegans.

One social media user wrote: “It’s a vegan café. The cakes are delicious and the owner is very friendly and chatty.”

Another person said: “Thanks so much for bringing this place to my attention. I visit West Wales often, and I love discovering new vegan eateries. I’ll be making the trip there next time I’m in Aber.

“People who don’t like what they serve are free to go to pretty much any other cafe… The same way I don’t go to steakhouses then complain they don’t offer what I want to eat.”

Farm Sanctuary, a vegan rescue center seeking to end animal agriculture, has been nominated for an award at the acclaimed Annual Webby Awards.

The sanctuary is nominated in the highly competitive category ‘Social: Animals’ – and it’s up against a host of social media stars.

Moreover, it’s the only non-dog ’cause-led’ nominee in the category.

The Webby Awards

The New York Times described the annual awards ‘the internet’s highest honor’. Activist and podcaster Jameela Jamil is presenting them this year.

Moreover, the social category celebrates creativity across social media accounts that celebrate animals.

Each year the category sees a host of pure-bred dogs and cats. This makes Farm Sanctuary’s nomination a ‘seismic shift’ in the way society views animals, the charity claimed.

The non-profit is also up against National Geographic photographer Vincent J Musi. He wrote the book The Year Of Dogs.

Other nominees include Izzy The Frenchie and Maxine the Fluffy Corgi – who has a following of more than 800,000. Additionally, there’s also Rupawl, the ‘world’s first doggie drag queen’.

Farm Sanctuary

Chief Communications and Brand Creative Officer Marie Jones told PBN: “For over 35 years, we have been fighting to make farm animals visible by helping people see them as the thinking, feeling individuals they are.

“A win would truly bring critical attention to these animals on an international scale – earning them the consideration they so desperately need and deserve.”

Marie Jones, Farm Sanctuary’s Communications Chief

“A vote for Farm Sanctuary is a vote for the billions of farm animals caught in the animal agriculture system.”

Moreover, the charity beat over 13,500 entries worldwide in securing a nomination.

Moreover, pop icon Billie Eilish paid a visit in a move to encourage people to adopt a turkey for Thanksgiving.

Winners are announced at the virtual awards on Tuesday, May 18.

Famous chef Gordon Ramsay, who is widely known for his love of meat, stunned his 11 million Instagram followers by announcing: ‘I’m turning vegan’.

Ramsay, who regularly takes to TikTok to mock at-home-chefs and vegans, made the announcement in a vegan cooking tutorial. The viral video garnered one million views in less than a day.

Vegan steak

‘Hi guys it’s Gordon. I’ve got a confession. After three decades of cooking, hundreds and hundreds and thousands of hours behind the stove… I’m turning vegan’, he said via his Instagram.

It shows him char an aubergine, adding oil and seasoning before basting it in a red wine and vegan butter jus.

At the end of the video, Ramsay jokes that he’s only turning vegan ‘for lunch, only’.

Upon sharing the recipe, he says ‘you won’t believe this juicy steak is vegan’.

‘For lunch only’

Ramsay teased the tantalizing recipe, garnering millions of views on social media as a result

Gordon Ramsay’s recipe

The recipe calls for a rub made from cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and peppercorns, and extensive roasting in the oven.

Ramsay garnishes it with shiitake mushrooms and creamy garlic mash, as well as a caramelized Veggie Demi Glaze.

For additional flavor, age the aubergine overnight with a sprinkling of the rub and drizzling of jus, he recommends.

Social media reaction

Upon posting the video to his TikTok, Ramsay wrote ‘That Vegan Teacher where are yo- oh wait’. This is a nod to the banning of viral vegan TikToker, That Vegan Teacher.

On Instagram, the reaction was positive with many praising the chef on making ‘a start’. One user wrote: ‘For lunch is cool, step by step’, whilst another claimed veganism is in fact ‘more than just a diet’.

‘If you want Gordon to be vegan show him why he is against abusing animals’, another added.

The chef has made moves towards accepting plant-based diets over the past few years, by adding vegan options in his restaurants. He’s openly accepted the rise in popularity and said in the past that the food industry ‘must adapt’.

The post Who Is That Vegan Teacher? Why Did TikTok Ban Her? appeared first on Plant Based News.

]]>
Unless you’ve been living under a rock: you’ve probably heard of That Vegan Teacher. But who is she? And why does she keep going viral on TikTok?

Otherwise known as Kadie Karen Diekmeyer, That Vegan Teacher is an elementary school teacher and vegan advocate.

She posts educational videos on activism and veganism on social media, garnering millions of likes. Moreover, she regularly promotes veganism through song and has a Spotify playlist of her original creations.

That Vegan Teacher had garnered a staggering 1.6 million followers on TikTok before she was banned.

That Vegan Teacher’s viral TikTok video

Recently, That Vegan Teacher attracted global media attention after urging celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay to go vegan.

In the video, Diekmeyer sings the celeb a song, telling him ‘hurting animals is wrong’. She adds: “And if you call me a donut, that’s fine, as long as you’re vegan from now on.”

Ramsay called the activist a ‘vegan donut’.

In response, Ramsay posted a video nodding along to the song whilst eating lettuce. He called her a ‘vegan donut’ and at the end of the video, took a large bite from a burger.

‘Beef burgers were consumed while making this TikTok’ was the caption. Later posting the video on his Instagram account, Ramsay said: “It’s an honor a song was written about me….and now back to my beef burger.”

Controversy

Despite That Vegan Teacher’s popularity – some of her content has stirred controversy online.

Most of the criticism comes from Diekmeyer’s comparison of animal agriculture to the Holocaust – as well as her use of terms such as ‘meat is murder’.

Earlier this year, she came under fire for arguing that ‘coming out’ as a vegan is ‘more special’ than coming out as gay.

“Coming out as a vegan animal rights activist, as someone who cares beyond themself, is much more special than it is to come out as a member of the LGBTQ community,” she said.

“Coming out as a member of the LGBTQ community is an entirely selfish act. It’s talking about you only. It’s not talking about the things you’re going to do to better the world.”

Banned from TikTok

More recently, TikTok banned That Vegan Teacher for ‘violating community guidelines’.

The move followed a petition urging the social media platform to delete the activist’s account. It has garnered more than 20,000 signatures at the time of writing.

“Being a Vegan or Vegetarian is a healthful lifestyle that is a choice for some people,” the petition reads.

“However it isn’t always the best option medically or financially. The Creator known as That Vegan Teacher has violated multiple community guidelines in various videos, duets, and sounds.

“She’s a former certificated educator however has no background in veterinary nor human medicine. She has made blatantly racist, bigoted, discriminatory statements against anyone who doesn’t view veganism her way and her way alone.

“She has promoted multiple films that are dangerous to children given TikToks 13 yr old age requirement and many children under that age access it on a daily basis. These videos show violent depictions of animal slaughter in graphic detail.

“Her targets have included minors under 18, the LGBTQ+ Community, Person’s with disabilities, people of the black community, various religions and more. Multiple reports have been made against her content yet her platform remains active.”
